  4. Who we are? British American Tobacco Bangladesh is one of the oldest and largest multinational companies operating in Bangladesh. The UK-based British American Tobacco Group holds 65.91% share in the company. The Government of Bangladesh owns 28.7% through several of its agencies, while 5.39% is owned by other shareholders.We are a leading business organization in the industrial sector employing more than 1,300 people directly and a further 40,000 indirectly as farmers, distributors and suppliers. We have business contracts directly with around 21,000 registered farmers who produce high quality tobacco leaf.

Leadership is not an end in itself, but a company that leads its industry, is the preferred partner for key stakeholders and is seen to have a sustainable business, should be valued more highly. In order to deliver our vision, our strategy for creating shareholder value has four elements around which all our efforts revolve - Growth, Productivity, Responsibility and Winning Organisation.

  6. Our history… British American Tobacco Bangladesh began its operations in the sub-continent in the year 1910 as Imperial Tobacco Company Ltd. Post 1949, Pakistan Tobacco Company (PTC) came into existence with its head office in Karachi. During that time, PTC's East Pakistan office was in Armanitola which was ultimately moved to Motijheel. After independence, in 1972, Bangladesh Tobacco Company (BTC) was formed with British American Tobacco holding majority of the shares. In March 1998, Bangladesh Tobacco Company changed its corporate name into British American Tobacco Bangladesh proclaiming its common identity with other operating companies in the British American Tobacco Group.

  8. Our Corporate Social Responsibility. "Success and Responsibility Go Together" is the philosophy that has driven BAT Bangladesh over the years. We are carrying on with our commitment to contributing to the development of the country through our endeavours in various social, economic and environmental sectors such as:

  9. Free IT education for rural youth- Dishari: Dishari is a free basic IT education centre. The education centre is aimed at providing basic computer education to those who can less afford it. Up until today, nearly 700 students have been trained in our 4 Dishari centres based in Kushtia, Moulvibazar, Manikganj and Chakaria. 4 times National Award winner for afforestation programme: Over the last 25 years, since 1980 we have contributed with more than 50 million saplings We have recently been awarded the Prime Minister's National Award for our afforestation initiative in 2005. This is the fourth time we received this award after 1993, 1999 and 2001. Other community support initiatives: BAT Bangladesh's Community Services Project started in 2004. It reaches out to support nearly 21,000 farmer families. The initiatives taken under this project are: Education Assistance, Primary Health Care Support, Malarial Prevention, Sanitation Support, Commercial Afforestation, Compost Pits, Green Manuring, Neem Decoction, and Vegetable Growing.

Maternity Leave Policy: In BAT Bangladesh we value our employee's personal priorities. We allow maternity and paternity leave in our organisation. Our maternity leave of 6 months has allowed our female manager to balance her career aspiration with her role as a mother. Nusaibah Alam is one of the first beneficiary's of our 6 month maternity leave policy. We also have a provision for 2 weeks paternity leave policy for our male managers. Education Assistance Policy: We offer Education Assistance to our people so that they can pursue on with their higher studies and fulfill their dreams. Under this policy our managers can avail 50% of their education expenses.

  13. Human Resources … The Human Resources department bears primary responsibility for creating and sustaining a winning workforce for BAT Bangladesh. What this means is providing opportunities for talented employees to feel the satisfaction and fulfilment gained through being members of a responsible, winning organisation; where they are respected, rewarded and recognised; where their efforts are encouraged; where their careers are developed; where they understand the vision and strategy of the company; The HR function within BAT Bangladesh takes care of three broad areas:• Organisational Development• Reward• Talent Resourcing• Employee Relations

  14. Marketing … Building Brands is the effective management of all elements of the Marketing Mix and is extremely critical to our business success. Trade Marketing & Distribution is all about developing and implementing distribution plans · implementing merchandising and point of sale practices; monitoring and managing out of stocks and building an effective relationship with customers. Managing specialised channels is about effective management of business channels with key accounts in Hotels, Restaurants and Cafes (HORECA), Grocery and Convenience channels.

  15. Finance… Finance managers within BATB are part of the decision-making team, a business partner who is consulted and involved day to day, not merely reporting results and setting budgets. Finance department's activities within BAT Bangladesh includes:• Setting and delivering against financial objectives• Planning and budgeting for optimal use of resources to grow the   business and to satisfy shareholder expectations • Management reporting to the Board on business performance,   current and future• Statutory reporting and support of investor relations• Audit and business risk management• Acting as a value adding business partner to all functions

  16. Leaf… The Leaf Department is responsible for purchasing, processing, packing, shipping, and storing leaf tobacco for BAT Bangladesh. Essentially, it is the Leaf Department's job to ensure a secure, continuous and consistent supply of tobacco at the best cost and right quality (as required by our Blenders) to maintain the correct taste of final products for the consumer. Therefore, the Leaf Team's skills make a significant contribution to the ongoing success and reputation of our brands, as well as our Company's position as market leader.Achieving this objective demands more than simply buying tobacco. The team manages the tobacco all the way from the grower's selling floor to input into factory production.

  17. Information technology… With the emergence of super information highway and the ever evolving technological environment, a competitive advantage is created for our business. At British American Tobacco Bangladesh, we have a robust Information Technology team which provides critically important support service to all the other departments.A career in Information Technology could see you contributing to BAT Bangladesh in a whole range of ways, from the general application of IT to specific advice on hardware and software; from the application of telecommunications for voice, data and video to solving complex, strategic business challenges.

Operations… Operations function is at the heart of our business, so we invest substantially in people and technology to ensure that our processes are state-of-the-art, highly flexible and responsive to the needs of our customers and consumers alike. Green Leaf Threshing Plant (GLTP): The company's GLTP, set up in 1994, is in Kushtia. It prepares the green tobacco leaf procured by our Leaf team for further processing and manufacturing. Primary Manufacturing Department (PMD): is responsible for further conditioning of the tobacco to make it ready for production. Secondary Manufacturing Department (SMD): uses the tobacco, which is blended and conditioned by PMD, along with wrapping materials, to manufacture cigarettes

  19. 2nd part ends… Legal… Legal and Secretarial function is considered as the first line of defense and an essential business process of the company.The major activities of Legal and Secretarial includes litigation management, combat-illicit trade, trade marks & agreement management, in-house legal counsel, share management which is listed with two stock exchanges and operating under central depository system, company secretarial function, records management, shaping regulatory environment, trust fund management, policy compliance etc. Legal and Secretarial function also drives to ensure Corporate Governance in the company.

  20. Our brands… Informed adult smokers are our consumers; it is their needs and wants for world-class cigarette brands that we wish to cater for. All our marketing and manufacturing activities are geared towards understanding and satisfying their diverse preferences. British American Tobacco Bangladesh operates in the key segments of the cigarette market of Bangladesh with its drive brands like Benson & Hedges, John Player Gold Leaf, Pall Mall and Star.

Benson & Hedges … Benson & Hedges cigarettes were created for the then Prince of Wales in 1873.   British American Tobacco acquired the rights to the brand  in a large number of overseas markets in 1956. Today,   British American Tobacco Group companies sell  Benson & Hedges in more than 80 countries, including  Australia, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Malaysia and South Africa. Launched in 1997, Benson & Hedges (B&H) maintains our dominance in premium segment and drives the growth of premium price segment in Bangladesh market. BAT Bangladesh was the first market to launch the new pack of B&H at the beginning of  September 2005.

  22. John Player Gold Leaf… John Player Gold Leaf is today sold in over 20 countries and is particularly popular in Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia. The brand dates back to the 1890s. Launched in 1980, John Player Gold Leaf is one of the highest selling brands of our Company - dominating the medium price segment.

  23. Pall Mall … Pall Mall was introduced in 1899 and, with a strong American heritage, is now sold in some 60 countries. Pall Mall is the first Global Drive Brand to be launched in Bangladesh on 19 March 2006 All three variants (Full Flavour, Lights & Menthol) of Pall Mall have created new excitement and vibe in the Taka 2 segment.

  24. Star… Star, launched 40 years ago, is still a dominant brand in the low segment. Recently a new pack of Star was launched and currently it is the highest volume generating brand for the Company.

  25. Partnership with University… We have always valued and nurtured our partnership with the universities which are the source of our "Talent Pool". We run several partnership programmes with the universities in Bangladesh. Battle of Minds - Talent Promotion Programme is one such endeavour. Besides, we regularly interact with the university students and graduates through our internship programmes, job fairs and campus presentations. Talent Promotion Program: IBA of the University of Dhaka became the champion while Independent University Bangladesh (IUB) and North South University (NSU) became the first and second runners up respectively. Apart from the team awards, 23 individual participants were awarded with free tickets to "BAT Bangladesh's Assessment Centre" inviting them to take on the challenge of becoming part of the winning organization.

  26. Career Talk… "Career Talk" sessions are organised to familiarise British American Tobacco Bangladesh with the various universities. A typical "Career Talk" elaborates on our company's activities and initiatives in Bangladesh and around the world. Top Team members as well as the senior HR specialists of our company also talk about the training, development and of other opportunities the organisation provides. Besides, "Career Talk" includes a discussion on bridging the gap between the student life and the professional world.   27. 3rd part ends… Internship… We offer internship to students of selected universities to facilitate practical learning to the students before they join the corporate world. There are top ten Universities of Bangladesh who are enlisted with us from where we chose internees from. We work with the internship placement offices of the universities for the selection. We take internees during the Spring, Summer and Autumn session where students work on specific projects in our organization.

The Group's subsidiary companies have 64 cigarette factories in 54 countries producing some 678 billion cigarettes (including the make-your-own cigarette 'stix') and 7 factories in 6 countries manufacturing cigars, roll-your-own and pipe tobacco. The Group's associate companies have 14 cigarette factories in 7 countries producing some 232 billion cigarettes. Our companies, including associates, directly employ almost 97,000 people worldwide.

It is a long-term strategic exercise to continually improve the quality of management with a consistent focus on future requirements.

  33. Reqruitment policy… • British American Tobacco Bangladesh has been in e-resourcing since 2002. We focus on e-based advertisement for more visibility and transparency beside the conventional print media. All recruitment related notices are posted on the www.bdjobs.com website. Candidates are required to fill up the blank resume format provided in the website. A well-structured and systematic selection procedure is followed to get the most suitable candidate. Following the selection procedure, • pre-employment medical examination and reference checks are done. • We entertain application from recognised universities from home and abroad. • Applicant must be a citizen of Bangladesh. • We encourage students with good academic track record to apply.

Reqruitment policy… • We are not prejudiced against race, sex, religion, age etc. Positions will be offered to the candidate on the basis of his/her ability and the requirement of the company. • If your application is successful, you will be invited to a preliminary interview which will be taken by a member from the function to which you have applied and a member of the Human Resource team. This is a chance for you to find out more about us, as it is for us to find out whether you have the competencies we are looking for. • As a final candidate, you will be invited to a specifically designed British American Tobacco assessment centre. • If you get through the Assessment Centre, you will be recommended to the respective Heads of Functions for a final Interview. • We are committed to keep you informed of your progress through every step of the selection process.
