  1. Swarm Intelligence: being smart as a collective Nyree Lemmens

  2. Today's problems are getting increasingly complex while the resources to solve them are limited

  3. You are expected to find the solutions to the problems

  4. Without these solutions, progress will stop

  5. No progress?! You can't let that happen! Let's use Swarm Intelligence!

  6. Problems, problems, problems

  7. Localization is the problem of finding out an agent's location (in coordinates) relative to its environment

  8. Navigation/Path Planning is the problem of deciding which route to take, based on and expressed in terms of the current (internal) representation of the terrain.

  9. Routing is the problem of discovering and selecting paths in a network along which to send network traffic

  10. Centralized methods offer limited solutions

  11. Swarm Intelligence shows promise

  12. Nature provides highly evolved mechanisms

  13. Fish Schooling

  14. Bird Flocking

  15. Ant Foraging

  16. Ant/Bee Localisation is based on Path Integration

  17. Bee Recruitment

  18. The general idea of Swarm Intelligence

  19. Computer Science draws inspiration from the biological examples

  20. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) draws inspiration from flocking and schooling

  21. Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) draws its inspiration from ant foraging (best known example)

  22. Bee Colony Optimization (BCO) alternatively draws its inspiration from bee foraging/nest selection

  23. How does this solve problems?

  24. Localization can be solved as a combined effort

  25. Same goes for navigation/path planning.

  26. By cooperation, great things can be accomplished

  27. Static Routing

  28. Mobile Ad-hoc Routing

  29. AODV is the current state-of-the-art routing protocol

  30. AntHocNet improves on current state of the art routing algorithms

  31. SI inspired routing protocols outperform classic protocols

  32. Great result! But there is still room for improvement

  33. Stigmergic Landmark Routing improves the performance even further

  34. Stigmergic Landmark Routing creates a landmark route in a joint effort Stores list of nodes to get to goal

  35. SLF’s preliminary results

  36. WOW!!! Efficient, Scalable & Adaptive
