  3. Why do we do work experience?

  4. It makes your learning real • Helps you think about your ambitions in a more realistic and informed way • Gives you the chance to find out what work is really like, and • A chance to find out about particular jobs

  5. Searching for a Placement

  6. This does not need to be about your future career It can be something that you just want to experience or think you would enjoy

  7. Choose the sort of place you would like to go Where would you like to work? What would you like to do? Who do you need to talk to?

  8. Finding out what is available You will be responsible for arranging your own placement with an employer • Ask parents/guardians or relatives, family friends. • Ask local employers – it is best to go in person but you could telephone or email them • Research on the Approved Employer Database: See Mrs Rye

  9. Mrs Rye is the Information, Advice and Guidance Administrator • You can find Mrs Rye in the IAG base in the Library • Mrs Rye can: • Help with Work Experience • Provide some Careers/Employment information • Also at the IAG Base is: • Mrs Gilmour, Learning Partnership West Advisor who can offer Careers Advice and Guidance

  10. What should I say to employers? Explain that you are looking for a work experience placement Tell them the dates Be prepared to explain why you want the placement Always say thank you. NOTE: A telephone help sheet is included in your work experience help pack.

  11. When you have found a placement • Work Placement Form WEX1 (yellow form) • Student Information Form • Return them to: • Mrs Rye • IAG Base (in the Library)

  12. Cut Off Dates Work experience forms must be returned to Mrs Rye by: Our Area – 28th April 2014 This includes North Somerset, Bristol and most of South Gloucester Out of Area (Except London) – 17th March 2014 Work Experience in London – 24th February 2014

  13. Some Issues: • Competition with other schools (Clevedon School is doing work experience in the same week as us) • Travel • Popularity of placements – vets, primary schools • Some employers (Police, NHS) may require nomination through the school – see Mrs Rye

  17. Work Experience Information All Work Experience Forms, including consent forms, will be in your tutor’s pigeon hole by the end of this week
