    1. Anatomy of the breast

    3. The breasts are modified sweat glands, producing milk in females. Each breast has one nipple surrounded by the areola. They are protuberant in females. The variations in size is dependent on the fatty content since the anatomic extent of the base is relatively constant. The breast consists of the base which rests on the anterior thoracic wall and protrudes onto the pigmented areolar. The nipple arises from the areolar. The base is located between the 2nd and 6th ribs extending from the sternal edge to near the mid axillary line. Four quadrants (upper outer, upper inner, lower outer and lower inner) are recognized each drained by 15-20 lactiferous ducts which confluents to open into the nipple. The skin overlying the breast is the same as that of the surrounding skin but for the hyper pigmentation of the areolar. The inframammary fold (or line, or crease) is an anatomic structure created by adherence between elements in the skin and underlying connective tissue and represents the inferior extent of breast anatomy.
