  3. Morning Meeting • Greeting • News and Announcements: (Daily letter written to the students about something they will do that day, which includes finding the mistakes in the letter according to the editing skills currently worked on).

  4. Community Meeting • Similar to Morning Meeting but with the entire first grade (only on Thursdays) • Second Step Lesson • Student of the Week • Community Building Activities

  5. Reading Street • Getting Ready to Read: • The Big Question (for the unit) • Essential question of the week (the week’s focus) • Amazing Words (sets the foundation for text comprehension in later grades) • Phonics/Phonemic Awareness • Read and Comprehend: • Comprehension Skill and Strategy • High-Frequency Words • Academic Vocabulary and Fluency • Main Selection and Paired Selection Readings • Practice Stations • Language Arts: • Conventions • Writing • Handwriting

  6. Shared Reading • Concepts About Print • 1-1 matching • Directionality • Return sweep • Punctuation • Book Parts • Comprehension Skills and Strategies

Practice Stations • 20 minutes of small group, guided instruction with similar skill needs, 20 minutes of independent reading, and 20 minutes of independent writing • Grouping based on assessments and change throughout the year • Independent work (practice stations) are reading and writing activities used to review previous skills taught, in order to complete reading groups.

  8. B.E.A.R. Time (Being Excited About Reading) • Independent silent reading • How to choose a “just right” book • Browsing Boxes • Giving them time to practice skills learned during small group reading instruction

  9. Everyday Math • Spiraling curriculum: intended to go back and review previous skills. • Individual journals • Games • Homelinks • Mental math and slates • Calendar activities

  10. Science • Plants • Animals and Their Homes • Our Earth • Weather and Sky • Matter • Motion and Energy

  12. Homework • Everyday Math Homelink most nights. Students may need help reading the directions, but should be able to complete this individually. • Read 10-15 minutes each night. There will be online reading assignments. • Each week students will learn spelling and high frequency words that will go on our Word Wall. The students will be assessed on these words. I will post the week’s words on our class website. • Additional worksheets will be assigned

  13. Reading Street Online • Will be ready to go on October 1st. • Information on how to log on including your child’s log in information will be sent home once I receive the information.

  14. Specials • Mondays: PE with Mr. Brooks 2:15-2:55 • Tuesdays: Music with Mr. Landana 1:30-2:10 • Wednesdays: Art with Mrs. Plourde 2:15-2:55

  15. Snack • Please send in ONE healthy snack per day along with a drink. • Children may bring in a water bottle to keep at their seat. Please send in a pop top or similar bottle to prevent spillage.

  16. Odds and Ends • Parent/Teacher Communicator Folder: Please check and empty every night and are returned to school the next day. • Designated Volunteers: Need to be fingerprinted. • Letter-Writing Folder beginning last Friday of Sept. • Spelling words on index cards • Children must memorize their lunch number, cards sent home last week. • Field trip to the apple farm; permission slips
