The War of 1812 • The War of 1812 featured the US again battling Britain for control in N. America • African Americans were once again offered freedom to enlist with the British • Also, the US initially refused to enlist blacks due to fear of slave revolt
The War of 1812 • The first African American participation for the US came when the British invaded the Chesapeake area burning Washington D.C. and attacking Baltimore • This led to the development of a Black Brigade raised by Richard Allen, Absalom Jones and James Forten to protect Philadelphia
The War of 1812 • African Americans did fight for the US in two of the war’s most important battles • The naval battle at Put-In-Bay on Lake Erie secured control of the Great Lakes for the US • 25% of Commodore Perry’s troops were African American and he praised their bravery although he was initially against using black troops
The War of 1812 • African American troops also fought in the Battle of New Orleans which was fought after the peace treaty was negotiated • 600 black troops fought under future President Andrew Jackson • He gave these troops equal pay and benefits
The Missouri Compromise • In the 1819 Missouri Compromise, the first differences between the North and South over the expansion of slavery became apparent • Missouri had applied to be added to the Union as a slave state which the North opposed • The Missouri Compromise admitted Missouri as a slave state but also added Maine as a free state • This set a line that banned slavery in the Northern portion of the Louisiana Territory and set the stage for the conflict that would become the Civil War
