  1. How could you determine what conditions pill bugs enjoy?

  2. Your job…Determine what conditions pill bugs (AKA rolly poly’s) prefer

  3. We first must make some observations….

  4. Science begins with observations Observations lead to questions What questions did you come up with after observing the pill bug?

  5. What is science? • The pursuit to discover elements of our world!! • How do we do that? • We ask testable questions? • What is a testable question? • A question where a test can be constructed to answer the question. • Ex: Do sophomores at Eastlake High prefer Coke or Pepsi • Not… How can we stop world hunger?

  6. Your job…Determine what conditions pill bugs (AKA rolly poly’s) prefer

  7. Science is all about answering questions? • Decide a testable question that you would like to try and answer about pill bugs. Ex: Do pill bugs prefer the dark? • Create a Hypothesis reason + because (Must be based on observations) • Create a Procedure • Determine Materials Needed • Create Steps that are detailed enough your mom could repeat • Make sure your procedure is controlled (Only change one thing) • The manipulated variable is the component you are intentionally changing • Ex: Temperature, Moisture, Light • The responding Variable is what is changing as a result of your “manipulation” • Ex: Pill Bug Behavior, Time spent in a certain location • To have a fair experiment you must have a control • A set up that tests the normal conditions to tell if there is any difference than a condition where something is changed.

  8. Collect Data Make sure Tables have Titles, Labels and Units Make sure the data lines up with the question you are trying to answer

  9. What did you determine? • Was your method a good way to conduct your experiment? Why or Why not? • What did you control in your experiment? • How did you create a control?
