  1. Growth Regulation

  2. Anterior Pituitary • responsible for physical growth growth hormone (GH)– levels dictate amount of growth in developing organism • peptide hormone

  3. Growth Hormone Regulation hypothalamus growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH) growth hormone inhibiting hormone (GHIH) anterior pituitary GH half-life is 20 – 30 min growth hormone (GH)

  4. Growth Hormone Effects • cartilage & bone – increased length and width of skeleton • muscle cells – increased cell number (hyperplasia) and cell size (hypertrophy) • ribosome function – increased protein production • fat metabolism – fatty acids as energy source

  5. Growth Hormone Abnormalities • Dwarfism • Gigantism • Acromegaly

  6. Dwarfism Cause: • decreased GH secretion during childhood Result: • limited height (4 feet tall) • normal proportions

  7. Dwarfism

  8. Gigantism Cause: • increased GH secretion during childhood Symptom: • height much taller than average Treatment: • surgery if hypersecretion due to tumor growth on pituitary

  9. Gigantism

  10. Acromegaly Cause: • increased GH secretion as an adult Symptom: • bone lengthening has stopped • bone width increases Treatment: • surgery if hypersecretion due to tumor growth on pituitary

  11. Acromegaly
