“Don’t knock the weather; ninety percent of people couldn’t start a conversation if it didn’t change once in a while.” “Water and air, the 2 essential fluids on which all life depends, have become global garbage cans.” 17 November 2014
The Atmosphere • Understand the development of the atmosphere. • Learn about the structure & composition of the atmosphere. • Consider some of the human impacts on the atmosphere. 17 November 2014
Formation of the Atmosphere • 5 billion years ago – no atmosphere • Volcanic eruptions released gases & UV radiation levels v. high – no life forms. • Early atmosphere 5-4.5 billion yrs BP • Water vapour 80% • Carbon dioxide 12% • Sulphur dioxide 7% • Nitrogen 1% & other trace gases • UV radiation reduced and early organisms used CO2 and released O2 – atmosphere slowly developed that could support plant and animal life. 17 November 2014
The Atmosphere • Use page 17 of book to make notes on the 4 layers of the atmosphere; include: • Name • Location • Features e.g composition, wind speeds, air pressure etc. 17 November 2014
Human impact on the atmosphere • For each factor consider the effects at local, national/regional and global scale. • Human activity - ? 17 November 2014
