  4. What is obesity? • BMI (body mass index—measure body weight and height) score is 30-40 • Over 40 is morbidly obese • Weight Gain = more calories are consumed than burned • 20% or more over your ideal, healthy body weight

  5. Obesity Facts Becoming an increasingly common topic…those affected have doubled & tripled in the last 20 years. Effects 2/3’s of Americans 400,000 deaths per year 1 in 4 children are overweight and at risk Crosses all races, genders, income levels and age groups Which country do you think has the highest percent of obesity?

  7. Obesity Statistics In 2012 35.7% (1/3) of U.S. Adults were obese. In 2010, 18% of U.S. children and adolescents were obese. In 2009-2010, over 78 million U.S. adults and about 12.5 million U.S. children and adolescents were obese. 16-18 % of elementary school children are joining the ranks of being overweight or seriously overweight.

  8. More Stats 60% of overweight children have at least one additional cardiovascular disease risk factor, and 25 % have two or more heart-related risk factors. Heart disease and related diabetes will shorten children’s lives by 20-30 years if the epidemic is not stopped. In 2004 it was estimated that American children may be the first generation to live shorter lives than their parents

  14. Genetics Genes controlling appetite & metabolism enhance chances More genes being discovered that increase obesity chances Genetic factors play a role but to fully develop a lot of caloric intake must occur

Environmental Factors • Average caloric intake has increased significantly -readily available foods (fast food and junk foods) -buying foods in bulk -healthier foods are more expensive than fast food • Lack of physical activity ( 1 in 4 get none) -increase in technology -long work hours -less manual labor -no desire

  16. Treatment For those who are overweight: -control appetite -eat healthier foods -increase activity level For those who are obese: -all of the above -medication to control hunger/absorb fat -weight loss surgery (gastric bypass)
