  2. Who is Vincent van Gogh? • Vincent was born in Holland March 30 1853 • Where in the world is Groot-Zundert, Holland? • What was his family like? MOTHER: Anna Cornelia Carbentus FATHER: Theodorus van Gogh (minister) FAMILY TREE Vincent van Gogh Theo van Gogh

  3. His first masterpiece… Vincent first worked with his uncle as an art dealer. This is where he visited museums and began learning more about art. In the late 1870’s he pursued religious studies, wanting to fight poverty. His religious teachings started in a mining town. Vincent painted the miners, The Potato Eaters is known for being his first masterpiece.

  4. Oh, Brother! Vincent’s brother Theo helped him out financially ($$$) while working in the mining town. Vincent would end up receiving help from his brother Theo for the rest of his life.

  5. Self Portrait 1889 After moving in with his brother Theo in Paris, Vincent was introduced to Impressionist artists. This self portrait was painted during one of Vincent’s depressions.

  6. Impressionism vs. Post- Impressionism • Inspiration from Impressionists! • Impressionism is a style of painting originating in France around 1875 emphasizing effects of light on color. (soft and natural colors) • Post impressionism was building off the ideas of impressionism but rejecting its traditions. (Vibrant Colors) • Post Impressionists sought out to find emotion in paint.

  7. 1888-1890 • Vincent became very ill with a condition characterize by anxiety, agitation, mental dysfunction, and disturbed behavior. • Under the care of doctors Vincent produced more than 80 paintings in June and July of 1890. • His death occurred at the age of 37, his brother Theo couldn’t handle the loss – he passed away the next year. • Vincent worked as an artist for 10 years and produced 1600 paintings and drawings.

Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh $116,790,000 Portrait of Dr. Gachet by Vincent van Gogh (1905) Vincent van Gogh actually painted two versions of Dr Gachet's portrait with a slightly different color scheme. The other version is located at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
