  2. What Is It? • Melanin is not produced. • This results in the loss of color in hair, skin, and eyes. • Two recessive genes. • Hereditary disease.

  3. How Does It Occur? • Missing of pigment cells during the development of the embryo. • Or the pigment cells being unable to produce melanin. • Tyrosinase does not produce well.

  4. Signs • Signs: no pigment in- • Hair • Eyes • Skin

  5. Symptoms • White hair • Skin may be a slight pink. • Extreme sensitivity to light. • Astigmatism • Mental and physical retardation

  6. Treatments • Reduce sun burn risk. • High SPF sunscreen • Sunglasses may help relieve light sensitivity. • Eye muscle surgery or glasses.

  7. Research • Little being done. • University of Wisconsin does look into it. • A mutation of one of several genes gene that causes albinism.

  8. Interesting Facts • Some people with albinism have red pupils. • Legend: the spot on the 7-UP logo comes from it’s inventor, who had red eyes because of albinism. • Frequency in Humans: • Per million births= 100 people have it • % of Carriers= 2 • % of Allele= 1
