Preparing and Delivering Effective New Member Orientations • New member orientations can be key to both the present (member participation) and future (member retention) of a lodge, but they must be well planned and well executed. • Because all new members receive the welcome packet from Moose International that includes materials regarding the fraternity, lodges do not need to spend much time covering this information. • This is a prime opportunity to “sell” the lodge to the new member. Talk about the variety of social activities, the service that the lodge provides to the community and the opportunities to participate as a volunteer, a member of a sports team or a committee member. • Preparation goes far beyond the actual agenda for the orientation program. Is the lodge home clean and presentable? Are those presenting the orientation dressed appropriately? Are there nametags for attendees to wear? Will there be a special reception held in conjunction with the orientation program? • Keep the atmosphere relaxed and informative. This is not a time to be identifying potential lodge officers or pressuring new members to get involved. Allow new members to learn and find the programs that interest them. • Avoid the use of terms like “Fellow”, Pilgrim”, “25 Club” and “Gimme 5”, which are familiar to existing members, but are foreign and have no meaning to new members. Stick to the basic concepts.
