  2. Welcome! Dear New Member, Congratulations and welcome! We are pleased you have selected ASLMS as your professional development organization. Brian D. Zelickson, M.D. ASLMS President Please take a few moments from your busy schedule to review the valuable information contained within this New Member Orientation so you can become familiar with the many benefits ASLMS has to offer you. Also, it may be helpful for you to print the orientation for quick and easy reference. Additionally, I encourage you to become an active member by volunteering on committees or as faculty, vote, submit an abstract, newsletter or journal articles. Mission and Vision Statement • The mission of the ASLMS is to promote excellence in patient care by advancing biomedical application of lasers and other related technologies world wide. • The vision of the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery is to be the world’s preeminent resource for biomedical laser and other related technologies, research, education, and clinical knowledge.

  6. Access to Member Services To access the Member area of the ASLMS Web site, you first must create User Account. 1. Click “Member Services” 2. Click “Membership Information” 3. Click “Member Profile”

  9. Simply navigate to the ASLMS Main Web Site page and enter your Member I.D.# and newly created Password. Or, access on the screen where you created your Online account.

  10. Membership Communication The ASLMS Central Office communicates regularly with its members via E-mail. Watch your inbox for important news and announcements! It is the policy of ASLMS to not sell or provide E-mail addresses to third parties.

  12. Membership Dues* You may pay your membership dues either by returning the invoice mailed to you with your acceptance letter. OR Pay online by logging into “Member Services” and Click on “Membership Renewal/Research Contribution” *Individuals from countries sanctioned by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control must use third-country financial institutions as intermediaries for all payments to ASLMS.

  13. Donate to ResearchYour Donation is Tax Deductible! Since 2007, ASLMS has awarded over $1 million to select applicants who submitted innovative grant proposals. Every ASLMS member can invest in ongoing research by contributing to the ASLMS Research Program. It’s easy to donate! You can submit a donation with your Membership Dues or simply log into “Member Services” on the ASLMS Web site and Click on “Membership Renewal/Research Contribution” All contributor names will be published in the ASLMS Newsletter, Web site, and at the Annual Conference!   14. Earning reduced dues is easy. Click on the Member-Get-A-Member link on the upper right hand corner of the main page of the ASLMS Web site. Members Can Earn Reduced Dues! One member = $50 Two members = $100 Three members = $200 Four + members = $300 • Just enter one or two names and E-mail addresses of colleagues whom you are acquainted with. ASLMS will automatically send a pre-produced E-mail message from you directly to the person you’re inviting to join ASLMS. • When your colleague clicks on the link in the E-mail message received, he/she will be referred to the ASLMS Membership Benefits page which provides a quick and easy application process. • ASLMS will automatically record your referrals to ensure that you receive the appropriate reward. • Each applicant has to be approved and pay their membership dues for you to qualify for the reward. No cash rewards will be awarded to any person if the award would be contrary to any United States law, including but not limited to trade embargoes administered by the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control.

  20. Promote Yourself As An ASLMS Member! Send a news release: • Use the news release template by logging into “Membership Information” under the Member Services tab on the ASLMS Web site. Use the ASLMS name and logo: • All ASLMS members are permitted to reference their ASLMS membership in their communications and marketing materials. • Members must always utilize the name and logo in a professional manner consistent with the professional principles of the organization. • For more information, click on “Advertising ASLMS Name and Logo” under the Member Services tab on the ASLMS Web site.

The official journal of the Society is published and distributed to ASLMS members eleven times per year. • The journal contains clinical studies, reviews and research reports about the latest findings and uses of lasers in all surgical and medical specialties. • Members will receive E-mail content alerts, a full journal copy through mail, and access to the current issue plus 30 years of issues on-line. • To access on-line issues, new members must register and establish an account with Wiley InterScience to access on-line issues. Board certified physician members can be located by the general public through our “Physician Locator” service on the main page of the ASLMS Web site. • Each Board Certified member’s list of special procedures is included in their “Physician Locator” listing. • Board Certified members can update and/or add to their procedures by logging onto “Member Services” and updating their profile. Are You a Board Certified* Physician? *In order to be designated as being “Board Certified”, an individual must have received certification from one of the following: 1) an American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved board, 2) an organization recognized by the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) as qualified to certify physicians as doctors of podiatric medicine, 3) an American Osteopathic Association (AOA) approved board, 4) the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC), 5) the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC), or 6) the American Dental Association (ADA) approved board as qualified to certify Doctors of Dentistry.

Dr. Horace Furumoto Innovations Professional Development Award • This award was founded by Candela Corporation, Cynosure, and DEKA to memorialize the genius, leadership, and commitment of Dr. Horace Furumoto. These firms have joined together to create an endowment which annually may award up to $10,000 to an individual(s) who displays the potential for  leadership and innovation characterized by Dr. Furumoto.  The ASLMS is very pleased to administer the annual Dr. Horace Furumoto Innovations Professional Development Award.   48. Research Grant Program • Any individual or organization desiring to conduct research which fosters the development and/or use of lasers in medical or surgical applications is eligible to apply.
