  2. STAAR READING • Do: Get a clear understanding of the passage. Read the question carefully! Read EVERY answer carefully! Use process of elimination. Refer back to your reading. USE A DICTIONARY! • Don’t: Skim questions. Skim passages. Pick the first answer you read. Answer questions without looking back at the passage. Guess on vocabulary

  3. STAAR SHORT ANSWER • Do: Respond to the question. Name the passage you’re writing about. Use textual evidence. Use quotes that CLEARLY explain your answer. EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER! Don’t: Write in incomplete sentences. Paraphrase the evidence. Pick random quotes that need a lot of explaining. Get off topic from the question.

  4. STAAR Revise & Edit • Do: Refer back to your reading. Read questions carefully. Read EVERY answer carefully. Go back and replace what’s there with the possible answers. USE A DICTIONARY. Don’t: Try to remember what you read and just pick an answer. Skim questions. Skim answers. Try to pick an answer without trying to fill it in. Guess on words you don’t understand.

  5. STAAR WRITING • Do: Read the prompt carefully. PRE-WRITE!!! Respond TO the prompt! USE PARAGRAPH STRUCTURE! Include a intro., body paragraphs, and conclusion. Include transitions. INCLUDE A CLEAR, SPECIFIC THESIS! Use examples! Use first person if it’s a personal example. Use third person if it’s a historical example. Restate your thesis in your conclusion. RE-READ after writing. USE CORRECT SPELLING AND GRAMMAR!

  6. STAAR WRITING • Don’t: Skim prompt. Get off topic from prompt. Skip from example to example without transitioning. Use a vague thesis. Use vague, generalized examples. Use first person if it’s NOT IN A PERSONAL EXAMPLE. Use second person!! Conclude your paper without relating it to the thesis and body paragraphs. Use “I think.”
