  1. Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation (OAV): Consensus building activities Ivana Golub, PSNC TNC19, Tallinn 7C: Multilayered service orchestration and monitoring 18 June 2019

  2. Agenda • Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation (OAV) in WP6 • The need for consensus building • NREN OAV Survey • GN4-3 Future Service Strategy Workshop – OAV in GÉANT Community • Next Steps

  3. Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation (OAV) in WP6

  4. Current Status • OAV consensus building team was formed with 12 people from 8 project partner countries • NREN OAV Survey • 31 organisations participated in the survey • Co-organised GN4-3 Future Service Strategy Workshop • Focused on the use of Automation, Orchestration and Virtualisation in the GÉANT Community • TNC19: Orchestration, Automation and Virtualisation (OAV) BoF • Thursday morning side meeting – registrations still open

  5. NREN OAV Survey

  6. Survey Objectives • Learn about the strategy and actions of each NREN related to network and service orchestration, automation and virtualisation • Explore if there are common use cases, ideas, needs and issues in the community in the areas of automation, orchestration and virtualisation • Identify potential areas of collaboration both amongst NRENs and between NRENs and GÉANT • Determine and recommend potential future work within Work Package 6 (or other WPs) of the GÉANT GN4-3 project that could be of benefit to as many partners as possible for identified use case(s)

  7. Survey • Areas: • Existing platforms (OSS/BSS) • Current OAV use cases • Challenges in adopting OAV • Future OAV use cases • How GÉANT might help NRENs • Results: • Presented at the workshop, serving as a starting point for discussion there • https://wiki.geant.org/pages/viewpage.action?spaceKey=gn43wp3&title=GN4-3+Future+Service+Strategy+Workshop

  8. Survey Results Interpretation • NRENs have common pain points: • Lack of appropriate manpower, time, cost, priorities,... • A wide variety of systems and components are in use • No obvious common single direction or architecture for OAV • Opportunity exists for work on BSS and OSS – BSS integration • The most important OAV use cases for NRENs are configuration integrity, problem troubleshooting and security operations centre enhancements • The current NREN focus is more on providing their own services, rather than inter-domain services with other service providers

  9. GN4-3 Future Service Strategy Workshop OAV in the GÉANT Community

  10. OAV Workshop • 70 representatives in person or remote • 34 NRENs and affiliated organisations • Objectives: • Present the survey results • Gather input about the longer term vision / strategy • Gather input about immediate next steps along that path • Group discussions – on site and remote participants

  11. OAV Workshop Outcomes • There was a high interest in OAV topics • NRENs are all at different stages of their OAV journeys • Scope exists for greater collaboration between the NRENs • There is no “one size fits all” solution • A common terminology needs to be agreed • We must avoid reinventing wheels • A particular interest exists in OAV for connectivity services • Initial focus should be "intra-domain" • Value, uptake and sustainability are all important

  12. Next Steps

  13. Next Steps • Focus groups • Developing common terminology and a “reference architecture / framework” – explore APIs, interfaces • Exploring use case(s) • Knowledge sharing/exchange • Regular InfoShares on OAV technologies and NREN use cases • OAV Tools Repository – potentially using GÉANT GitLab • Open Wiki – https://wiki.geant.org/display/OAV (launching soon) • Continuing the discussion: • TNC19 OAV side meeting on Thursday - https://eventr.geant.org/events/3148 • STF meeting in Dublin on 3-4 July - https://eventr.geant.org/events/3126

  14. Conclusions • The GN4-3 Network Technologies and Services Development Work Package wants to raise the level of OAV in the community • Important to focus on specific use cases, initially intra-domain • Many differences in approaches to date by NRENs • Future work upcoming in the areas of: • Focus groups • Knowledge sharing/exchange • The TNC19 OAV side meeting / BoF is the immediate result of inputs from the survey and the workshop
