  1. Ancient Israel:Abraham through Jacob

Abraham • Abram (The man who God made his covenant withto make him the father of the Hebrews) left Ur, in Mesopotamia. • Abram and his wife Sarai settled in Canaan. • According to the Hebrews, God promised them a child, even though they were advanced in years. • When Abram and Sarai made their covenant with God they became Abraham and Sarah. “Ah” means breath of God in Hebrew.

  3. Isaac • Isaac was the son that God had promised Abraham • When Isaac was older Abraham took him to Mount Moriah to sacrifice him to God. • But Abraham was told not harm Isaac, and God provided a ram to be sacrificed.

  4. Jacob and Esau • Isaac and his wife Rebekah had two sons. Esau was the first born and Jacob was the second born. • As tradition held, Esau was given the birthright. • Jacob used Esau’s hunger and impatience to buy his birthright for soup. • When Isaac was old and blind Jacob tricked Isaac into giving him the blessing of the family. (His offspring would be a great nation)

Jacob • Jacob would end up having twelve sons, whose names would be the twelve tribes of Israel. • Rueben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Dan, Naphtali, Gad, Asher, Issachar, Zebulan, Joseph, Benjamin. • Jacob favored Joseph and Benjamin because they were born from the wife Jacob loved, Rachel. • The other ten brothers despised Joseph and sold him into slavery to Egyptians.

  6. Joseph • Joseph started as a slave but was respected by his master • He became a prisoner after his master’s wife accused him of abusing her. • Joseph interrupted a dream of Pharaoh and Pharaoh eventually made him 2nd in command in all of Egypt. • The rest of Joseph’s family came to Egypt when famine struck Canaan • Joseph forgave his brothers and they all moved to Egypt and lived well.

  7. The Hebrews in Egypt • The Hebrew population grew as the years passed • A new Pharaoh took over who didn’t know Joseph and how he had helped the Egyptians avoid famine. • The new Pharaoh enslaved the Hebrews • After sometime Pharaoh received a prediction from his Astrologers that a Hebrew boy would lead the Hebrews out of Egypt, so he decreed all Hebrew boys be thrown in the Nile. • Moses was placed in a basket and sent down the river and was found by Pharaoh’s daughter.

  8. The Exodus • The Hebrews left Egypt • They spent 40 years in the desert before they entered the land of Canaan. • During that time The Hebrews developed The 10 Commandments.
