  2. A summary of information includes only the main ideas and the most important details. A summary of a story briefly mentions its characters, setting, conflict, main plot events, and resolution.

  3. This paragraph, used as an introduction in your textbook, summarizes earlier parts of the book On the Banks of Plum Creek. The story map below identifies the summary’s main points. Let’s complete the story map. Pa takes Ma and Carrie to town for supplies. Mary and Laura stay behind.

  4. The paragraph summarizes the episode in On the Banks of Plum Creek when the cattle get into the hay-stacks. Volunteer to read aloud. The writer used a story map to identify the main elements of the episode. The summary includes only the most important details from the episode.

  5. Laura, Mary, their parents, the cattle, the dog Jack a farm on the prairie The cattle want to eat the hay, Laura needs to save the hay. The girls’ parents go to town. Laura and Mary stay on the farm. The cattle get into the hay-stacks. Jack barks, but they keep eating the hay. Laura yells, waves a stick, and chases the cattle. Laura chases the cattle away from the hay. Her father says she did the right thing.

  6. Use a story map to help you plan your summary. Remember stories include a conflict faced by the main character or characters. The story events usually lead to a resolution of the conflict. Include only the most important details in your summary.

  7. Writing PromptMost people have a favorite book or movie. Think of a movie or book that you enjoyed. Now, write a summary of the book or movie.

  8. Peer Conference Checklist Does the first sentence introduce the title of the book or movie? Are the setting, characters, and main conflict introduced early in the summary? Are events organized in chronological order? Did the writer proofread for grammar and spelling? Are compound subjects and predicates used correctly?
