  2. A large group of inherited disorders that are defined by primary defects in the development of 2 or more tissues, derived from embryonic ectoderm. Usually involves skin, hair, nails, eccrine glands and teeth. WHAT IS IT?

  3. Ectodermal dysplasias are caused by altered genes. The altered genes may be inherited or normal genes can mutate at the time of conception. CAUSES, INCIDENCE

  4. According to the Staff at the National Foundation for Ectodermal Dysplasia, this disease affects 2 per 10.000 birthsfor all forms of ED.

  5. 80% of persons with ED have a form that affects teeth!!!

  6. Longer chin Broad nose Big forehead Dryness in the eyes, mouth and nose Missing or malformed teeth, cone-shaped Defective enamel SYMPTOMS

  7. TESTS • Biopsy of mucus membranes • Biopsy of skin.

  8. TREATMENT There is no specific treatment for this disorder WHAT CAN BE DONE? • Wigs • Dentures • Usage of artificial tears

  9. EXPECTATIONS, PROGNOSIS IT WILL NOT SHORTEN THE LIFESPAN, BUT CONSTANT ATTENTION TO TEMPERATURE REGULATION HAS TO BE TAKEN.

  10. PREVENTION • If you have a family history of Ectodermal Dysplasia and you are planning to have children, genetic counseling is recommended. • Call for an appointment with your health care provider if you or your family member shows symptoms of this disorder • Go on www.nfed.org or call 618-566-2020.
