Sub-Genres • Mystery-a book, short story, movie, or play that the plot involves a crime and remains unsolved and secretive until the end • Horror-an overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying, or revolting • Detective-a branch of crime fiction in which a detective or detectives, professional or amateur, investigates a crime, often a murder • Romance-primarily focus on the relationship and romantic love between two people, and must have an emotionally satisfying ending

  3. Mystery There are key elements that must be present for a fiction book to fall under the subgenre of mystery fiction. These elements are: The story has a beginning where the crime and characters are introduced. The story has a middle in which the main story is told. The detective investigates the crime and interrogates the suspects. The story has an end in which the detective explains how he solved the crime. The suspects and criminal appear early in the story. All clues are given. The clues lead to the solution. The story contains an element of suspense.

Mystery Examples Books: • The Election by Darryl Green- In this novel a crime is committed during WWII an d the suspect later runs for election. • Carnal Weaponby Peter Hoffmann- A spy from France seduces and lures a woman for wrong reasons that could be fatal. Movies: • Dirty Harrydirected by Don Siegel- A serial killer is running mad through San Francisco and a cop is on the chase. • The Fugitivedirected by Andrew Davis- A man goes on the hunt for a murder who killed his wife. Meanwhile a cop is chasing the husband.

  5. Horror Like a mystery, for a story to be considered a horror it must have certain elements. These elements are: • Supernatural elements • Unexpected events • Explores dark malevolent side of humanity • Characters are relatable • Dark mood • Setting is usually in one location • Violent and graphic

Horror Examples Books: • IT by Stephen King- A supernatural clown who haunts people in a normal town. • I Am Legend by Richard Matheson- The main character depicts a regular person and he is up against supernatural people. Movies: • The Mist directed by Frank Darabont- This movie is about supernatural events going on in the mist that has engulfed a small town. • Nightmare on Elm Street directed by Samuel Bayer- This movie has a evil person haunting Elm Street which is depicted as an average street just like all the others. The only difference is Freddy haunts Elm.

  7. Detective Like the others, there are certain elements that must used to be detective fiction. Such as: • Seemingly perfect crime • Wrongly accused suspect even though at one point, the evidence points to them • Superior mind and observation of detective • Unexpected results and unveiling of how the detective knew

Detective Examples Books: • Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle- A detective named Sherlock Holmes tries to solve different mysteries. • The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time by Mark Haddon- An autistic teenager investigates the murder of a dog. TV Shows: • Law & Order: SVU- Detectives work in New York City trying to solve sexual crimes. • CSI: Miami- Detectives in Miami try to solve different murder cases.

  9. Romance The final subgenre of fiction is romance. Just like the other three, there are key elements that make fiction works romance. They are: • Conflict between the two lovers • Lovers grow together throughout the entire story • Satisfying and overall happy ending

Romance Examples Books: • The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks- This book is about two young adults who fall in love but come from two different types of backgrounds. • Dear John by Nicholas Sparks- This story is about two young adults who fall in love, but one being in the military keeps them apart for to long. Movies: • The Last Song directed by Julie Anne Robinson- This movie is about two young adults who fall in love but different family backgrounds and things in the past keep them from being happy. • The Titanic directed by James Cameron- This movie is about two young adults who are aboard the Titanic. They fall in love but her parents don’t like him because of he isn’t rich like they are.
