  • From Mongolia (northern Asia)

  • First leader to unite them- Genghis Khan

  • Pastoralists- herders

  • Lived in family groups called clans

    • Clans were determined by common ancestors

  • Expanded Mongol rule and conquered many territories, including Russia, Korea, and Afghanistan

    • Allowed for easier, safer travel from coast to coast

  • After his death, the Mongol Empire became even greater under the leadership of his son, Ogadai
