  1. Shoulder to Shoulder against Cancer CRUK’s campaign on NHS workforce shortages 13 JUNE 2018 SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  2. Why are we campaigning? (1) Early diagnosis of cancer saves lives • Half of people in the UK will now be diagnosed with cancer. • Early diagnosis is crucial to save more lives: the earlier a cancer is diagnosed the more likely it is to be treated successfully. • The UK is lagging behind comparable countries for cancer survival rates. 3. Why are we campaigning? (2) There aren’t enough NHS staff to diagnose and treat cancer early • Right now, 1 in 10 diagnostic posts are unfilled. • With a growing and ageing population, we will need more NHS staff in future to diagnose and treat cancer in the earlier, more treatable stages • There is a bottleneck in the system, and patients are waiting longer than they should for life-saving tests and treatment, and NHS staff are stretched. SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  4. For Government to deliver a fully-funded long-term cancer workforce plan that gives the NHS the staff it needs to diagnose and treat more cancers early and save thousands of lives Campaign Objective SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  5. Campaign launch CRUK in Parliament Day • Mass lobby day on one issue. • 80 volunteer Campaigns Ambassadors came down to Parliament to meet with their MPs. • Public Affairs team held a Parliamentary drop-in event at the same time. • Coordinated activity: all MPs were asked to sign a joint letter to the Prime Minister on this issue. • Almost half of MPs signed our joint letter in their meeting with their constituent. 6. Online actions mirroring offline • MP Joint Letter action • NHS ‘Thank you action’ SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  7. The Hand-in SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  8. Video Stunt (1) • What would get the new Health Secretary's attention? • Who is the target? • What is success? • Getting Matt Hancock’s attention • Having supporters take our new campaign action: Message to the Health Secretary SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  9. Video Stunt – tests (2) • Was video successful? • Tested video vs. call to action – surprising results • Video: 11K views on twitter – but little actions from this. • Promoted a GIF at the same time • Accumulated nearly 3,000 personalised messages in a couple of months SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  10. Video Stunt – the Hand in (3) SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  11. NHS Long-Term Plan LONG AWAITED NHS LONG-TERM PLAN • In January, NHS England released it’s much anticipated Long Term Plan • Nothing cancer specific, no elements of workforce planning • Said workforce would be looked at separately in the next round of planning. • The Plan did include the ambition to diagnose 75% of cancers early by 2028. EVENT TITLE HERE IN CAPS

  12. Key Learnings What have we learned so far? • Set out key milestones and campaign wins, and celebrate those with your supporters. • Be okay with quieter periods of time. • Supporters are willing to share their story if you provide an avenue to do (and make it quick!) • Videos – what is your measure of success for this? • Test content – and use Engaging Networks for this • UK wide launch… now England only. SHOULDER TO SHOULDER

  13. Next steps… EARLY DIAGNOSIS OF CANCER IS A PRIORITY, BUT STLL NO COMMITEMENTS TO ADDRESS THE CANCER WORKFORCE CRISIS • Needed something long-term, withstand a General Election or changing targets. • Decided on supporter petition to demonstrate the mass public support behind the campaign. Running throughout the summer. • We’ve built this petition on Engaging Networks, but also do offline petitions at our fundraising events and CRUK shops. • Also mirroring with an ‘MP petition’ to show Parliamentary support. • Kept target vague, ‘handing in the Government’ . • Now there’s a chance that Spending Review may be delayed, so looking into implications of that. • After this ..??
