  4. Virginia Secedes • Unwilling to fight against rest of South • Terrible loss for Union • Most heavily populated state in South • Most industrialized state in South

  5. Expectations • Both sides predicted a short war • Soldiers left to fight with bands playing and crowds cheering “The die was cast; war was declared…and we were all afraid it would be over and we [would] not be in the fight” - Sam Watkins, Confederate Soldier

  6. Union Strategies • Anaconda Plan • 3 parts: • Union navy would blockade Southern ports • Split the Confederacy in two at Mississippi River • Capture Confederate capital Richmond, Virginia
