How is freedom of speech limited? • China is a Communist country that instituted "The Great Firewall of China" in 1998 • Restricts their citizens' access to media and internet, limiting their human rights • Government spies on calls • You can't speak about: universal values, freedom of speech, civil society, civil rights, historical errors made by the government, crony capitalism, judicial indepedence

  3. History of Censorship in China • Shi Huangdi, the Emperor of the Qin Dynasty, burned all books except for those on medicine and agriculture • This is a form of censoring rightful information to citizens • There are many parelells between censorship in 250 B.C. China and China now

The Great Firewall of China • China is known to have a “Great Firewall” because of governmental efforts to control the free flow of information on the internet Chinese goverment violates human rights (Amnesty International) Internet companies help the Chinese government’s censorship: e.g. Yahoo!, Microsoft and Google • The Firewall blocks specific anti-CCP and anti-China related content.

  5. Techniques of filtering • Technical blocking: - IP blocking, - DNS tampering, - URL blocking using a proxy. • Search results are removed • Take-down • Induced self-censorship

  7. What does China censor? • Twitter, Facebook, WikiPedia, Google (some features), Instagram, SoundCloud, YouTube, SnapChat • 12 out of 100 top websites in world

Why is censorship present in China? • China opposes Western ideas about democracy, certain freedoms, and American values about distribution of power • If their citizens find out about these ideas, they are afraid they will overthrow the government and implement a democracy • If you offend China in any way, you will be thrown in jail • Censorship in China is a result of the government trying to avoid a revolution/have their citizens be too educated on certain matters that might contradict their own ideals.
