  4. Population Affected • In 2008 about 215,020 adults had lung cancer • The one-year survival rate is 41% • The five-year survival rate is 15% • Lung cancer is 15% of cancer diagnosis • Causes 29% of all cancer deaths

  5. Part of body affected/body part’s normal function • The body part affected is the lungs. • Their normal function is to bring oxygen in and carbon dioxide out.

  6. Symptoms!!!! • A consistent cough • Repeated problems with pneumonia and bronchitis • Chest pain • Shortness of breath, wheezing, hoarseness • Coughing up blood • Neck and face swelling • Loss of appetite or weight loss • fatigue

  7. Treatment • Surgery • Chemotherapy • Radiation therapy • Photodynamic therapy

  8. Diagnosis • Doctor looks at the medical + smoking history • If cancer is suspected the doctor will examine mucous cells from the lungs • To confirm the cancer the doctor must examine fluid and tissue from the lung

  9. Extra Information/interesting facts • Two major types of cancer: non-small cell and small cell • Cancer begins when cells in the lung grow • out of control and form a lump • Takes a series of genetic changes to for a lung cancer cell
