  2. What is e-commerce? • E-commerce is the purchasing, selling & exchanging goods and services over internet through which transactions or terms of sale are performed electronically.

  3. History of e-commerce • E-Commerce became possible in 1991 when the internet was opened to commercial use. Since then thousands of businesses have taken up residence at web sites. • Michael Aldrich demonstrated the first online shopping system in 1979. • In 1981 Thomson Holidays UK is the first business-to-business online shopping system to be installed. • In 1992 Book Stacks Unlimited in Cleveland USA opens a commercial sales website www.books.com selling books online with credit card processing.

  4. History of e-commerce • In 1994 “Ten Summoner’s Tales” by Sting (a music CD album) becomes the first secure online purchase through NetMarket. NetMarket is an online market place owned by Trilegiant. • Then in 1995 amazon.com was launched by Jeff Bezos. Which is today’s largest e-commerce company in the world with the revenue of US $232.887 billion.

  7. Different types of e-commerce • Business-to-Business (B2B) • Business-to-Consumer (B2C) • Business-to-Government (B2G) • Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C) • Government-to-Consumer (G2C) • Government-to-Business (G2B)

  8. What is B2B e-commerce? • B2B ecommerce is simply defined as ecommerce between companies. About 80% of e-commerce is of this type. • Example – An automobile manufacturer makes several B2B transactions such as buying tires, glass for windscreens and rubber hoses for its vehicles.

What is B2C e-commerce? • Business-to-consumer e-commerce, or commerce between companies and consumers involves customers gathering information and purchasing physical goods or receiving products over an electronic network. • Example – Examples of B2C businesses are everywhere. Exclusively online retailers include amazon.com, flipkart, etc.

  10. What is B2G e-commerce? • Business-to-Government e-commerce or B2G is generally defined as commerce between companies and the public sector. It refers to the use of the internet for public procurement, licensing procedures, and other government related operations. • Example – An example of a business-to-government service would be a small business providing IT consulting to a local government agency.

  11. What is C2C e-commerce? • Consumer-to-consumer e-commerce or C2C is simply commerce between private individuals or consumers. • Example – Example of C2C include eBay, OLX, etc.

What is G2C e-commerce? • Government-to-consumer e-commerce is a part of e-governance. • Objective of this model is to provide good and effective services to each citizen. • The government provides the following facilities to the citizens through website. • 1- Information of all government departments. • 2 – Different welfare schemes • 3 – Different application forms to be used by the citizens. • Example – india.gov.in

What is G2B e-commerce? • Government-to-business (G2B) is a business model that refers to government providing services or information to business organisation. • Government uses B2G model website to approach business organizations. Such websites support auctions, tenders, and application submission functionalities. • Example – www.incometaxindia.gov.in

Advantages of e-commerce • Faster buying or selling procedure, as well as easy to find products. • Buying or selling @ 24/7. • More reach to customers, there is no geographic limitations. • No need of physical company setups. • Customers can easily select products from different providers without moving around physically. • Easy to start and manage a business.

  15. Disadvantages of e-commerce • Unable to examine products personally. • Not everyone is connected to the internet. • There is possibility of credit/debit cards number theft. • The products delivered may be damaged.
