  1. It’s Alive!!!

  2. How do you know that this is alive?

  3. Biology is the study of living things “bio” means “life” “-logy” means “the study of” So… biology is when we study life!

  4. But how do we know if it is alive? • There are 7 things that are true about all living things • Scientists call them the “Characteristics of Life”

  5. Made up of Cells Every living thing is made up of one or many cells. When there is only one cell = unicellular When there are many cells = multicellular

  6. Reproduction Every living thing reproduces. When there are 2 parents = sexual reproduction When there is only 1 parent = asexual reproduction

  7. Growth & Development All living things grow and develop. When you increase in size = grow When your cells change = development

  8. Need for Materials & Energy Every living thing needs energy. Autotrophs make their own food Heterotrophs get food by eating others

  9. Response to the Environment Every living thing responds to its environment. A stimulus= something that makes you react (ex. noise, light, temperature, or touch)

  10. Maintaining Internal Balance All living things maintain homeostasis (maintaining an internal balance) in their body. Homeostasis is bringing your body back to normal (ex. Too hot, too cold, Dehydrated, hungry)

  11. Evolution All living things evolve. Evolution is when a species changes over time

  12. How will I remember all 7? Watch Video All living things: • Evolve • maintain Homeostasis • Grow and Develop • are made of one or many Cells • obtain and use Energy • Reproduce • Respond to the environment

  13. Mnemonic devices help you remember Even Hot Girls Can Enter Running Races!

  14. Are viruses alive? Why or why not?
