Missouri’s A+ Schools Program • Created by the Outstanding Schools Act of 1993 • Allows high school students to earn free tuition • state sponsored 2-year community college or vocational/technical school in the state of Missouri. • Select 4-year universities offer scholarships as well. • Makes college a reality for students

  3. Parkway’s A+ Schools Program • Parkway designated A+ school in the spring of 2011. • In 2011, Parkway had 117 A+ eligible graduates across the district. This translates to approximately $585,000 in scholarship money! • In 2012, Parkway had 164 A+ eligible graduates across the district. This translates to approximately $866,000 in scholarship money! • Currently, about 21% of Parkway high school students are enrolled in the A+ Program. • We want you to enroll too!

  4. Who Should be A+? • EVERY Parkway student! • Students that plan to attend a community college after high school. • Students who are unsure of their post-secondary plans. • Students that plan to attend a 4-year university. • A+ is a wonderful opportunity for students to get involved in the school and local community. • A+ funds may be accessed over a four-year period after graduation- wonderful insurance policy! • Select 4-year universities offer scholarships to A+ Students. • Builds a resume—shows community spirit

What Does It Take to be A+? • Sign an A+ Agreement by September 30th of senior year (the sooner the better!). • 2.5 cumulative unweighted GPA by graduation. • 95% attendance rate by graduation. • Good record of citizenship with NO drug or alcohol offenses. • Attend an A+ School for 3 years prior to graduation. • Perform 50 hours of district supervised, unpaid tutoring/mentoring. • Complete the FAFSA senior year. • Register with Selective Service (males as required by law). • Beginning with the high school senior class of 2015, have achieved a score of proficient or advanced on the official Algebra I EOC exam, or achieve a 17 on the Math section of the ACT prior to receiving A+ tuition reimbursement.

  6. Earning Tutoring/Mentoring Hours • A minimum of 25 hours must be earned through approved in-district tutoring activities. • A maximum of 25 hours may be earned through approved community service activities. • A maximum of 12.5 hours may be earned through approved job shadowing activities (Counts as community service). • A student must be enrolled in the A+ Program, complete the A+ Tutor Training, and have all necessary paperwork on file before any hours can be recorded.

Tutoring/Mentoring Opportunities • Many opportunities exist for tutoring/mentoring! • Opportunities include: • 6th Grade Camp • Peer Teaching • Child Development • High School Heroes • Special Olympics • After school tutoring at Elementary and Middle Schools • Summer School • Homework Room • PE Mentor • And many, many more! See your school’s A+ website or A+ Coordinator for more information and additional opportunities.

Next Steps… • Complete Parkway’s A+ Participation Agreement. • Complete Parkway’s on-line Tutor Training (See A+ Coordinator in your building for info) • Turn in the completed A+ Agreement and Tutor Training certificate to your school’s A+ Coordinator. • Once your paperwork is received, you will be ready to get to work!
