  1. Energy Storage – Coming to an AHJ Near You California Energy Commission Workshop August 21, 2018 Alex J. Morris CESA, VP of Policy and Operations

  2. About CESA The California Energy Storage Alliance (CESA) is a 501c(6) membership-based advocacy group committed to advancing the role of energy storage in the electric power sector through policy, education, outreach, and research. CESA’s mission is to make energy storage a mainstream energy resource in helping to advance a more affordable, clean, efficient, and reliable electric power system in California.

  4. Many types of energy storage – not all applicable to AB 546 • Electro-chemical, Thermal, Gravity, Mechanical, Kinetic, other • AB 546 focuses on batteries being interconnected at customer premises • Most customer sited projects in recent times have relied on Lithium-Ion storage, but other battery types also compete, e.g. advanced lead acid.

  5. Many use-cases can be targeted by storage solutions

  6. BTM Deployments will Continue to Grow Helpful to recall the uptake curve of Solar in the 2007-20015 timeframe: 142,164 solar projects deployed in California Projects, Customer-Sited Solar (2007-2018)  Customer Type Source: California Solar Initiative, 2018

  7. Energy Storage Is Arriving Each of California’s three investor-owned utilities (IOUs) are making major progress toward their 1,325 MW energy storage procurement target by 2020. 99.5 MW of energy storage that was procured and operational in six months to address reliability issues stemming from limitations of the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility. 8. Key Takeaways • Energy storage – coming to an AHJ near you! • Drivers: Compelling value to the grid and for customers for years to come • Storage permitting guidance will support work-flows, safety, utility, and customer goals. • CESA is thankful for the collaboration of many on how to accommodate storage permitting is smart, safe, and expedient ways.  • Special thanks to Assemblymember Chiu, OPR, and the CEC
