  11. Nixon brought about détente, or relaxing of tensions between the U.S. and China/Russia. Nixon with his top advisor Henry Kissinger.

  14. The Watergate Scandal The other called for breaking into the Watergate complex A committee to reelect Nixon was formed to gather intelligence on the Democratic party. They were known as the “Plumbers” One idea called for wiretapping

  15. Nixon’s “Plumbers” were arrested on the scene. They carried money with them that could be traced to Nixon’s campaign.

  16. Nixon wasn’t involved in the break-in , but would be involved in the illegal cover up.

  17. The Senate Select Committee begins an investigation into the illegal activities.

  18. The Committee learns that Nixon had been secretly recording presidential conversations since 1971. They order Nixon to release the tapes. He REFUSES!!!

  19. Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward, of the Washington Post, began to track down information to uncover the Watergate story.

  20. “I’m not a crook!” Nixon goes on television to claim his innocence

  21. He is replaced by Gerald Ford In the crisis, V.P. Spiro Agnew steps down under charges he took bribes during his term as governor of Maryland.

  22. When Nixon finally releases the tapes and transcripts, it was discovered that he had indeed ordered a cover up of the Watergate break in.

  23. “I shall resign the Presidency effective at noon tomorrow.” Facing the possibility of impeachment, Richard Nixon resigns as president of the United States.

  24. 1st time a President has ever resigned Nixon leaving the White House after his resignation on August 9, 1974.
