  2. Political Biography • Born in California, 1913 • Served in the Navy during WWII • A member of the Republican Party • Elected to Congress, the Senate, and was Eisenhower’s Vice President • Lost the 1960 election to Kennedy, but defeated Hubert Humphrey in 1968

  3. His Presidency Americans first landed on the moon in 1969 Visited Beijing and Moscow in 1972 where he helped ease tensions Ended U.S. involvement in Vietnam in 1973

  4. His Scandal • Carl Bernstein and Bob Woodward investigated a burglary at the Washington office complex known as Watergate for the Washington Post • Woodward’s inside source, FBI agent Mark Felt, was referred to as “Deep Throat” in the press • CIA agent E. Howard Hunt and FBI agent G. Gordon Liddy were indicted for assisting the burglars when they broke into the Democratic National Committee’s office

  5. What Was Discovered Liddy and Howard had also broken into a psychiatrist’s office Nixon secretly recorded all phone calls and conversations He was connected to the other problems with campaign contributions and funding Nixon fired some officials, but declared, “I am not a crook”

  6. Things Fall Apart The House of Representatives began to consider impeachment proceedings Nixon’s Vice President—Spiro Agnew had problems of his own and resigned in 1973 Nixon nominated and Congress approved Gerald Ford as his new VP

  8. Ending • Nixon was the only President to ever resign • Ford issued a Presidential Pardon, which prevented any further investigations • He travelled, representing the U.S., and had a full schedule of speaking engagements • Nixon died in April 1994 of a massive stroke in New York City
