MARTIN LUTHER… HE was a German priest in 1517 that publicly critisizedthe Roman Catholic Church. He charged that the church was too wealthy and that it abused its powers. He started the Protestant Reformation. It was a religious movement!
PROTESTANTS COME ON THE SCENE AND THEY ARE PROTESTING!!! • Many believed that God meant for religion to be simple.

King Henry VIII founded the Church of England often challenged the Catholic faith and even the pope! This ANGERED MANY!
AT THE SAME TIME THE KING OF SPAIN, KING PHILLIP II, WANTED TO DRIVE ALL PROTESTANTS OUT OF ENGLAND!
QUEEN ELIZABETH I WAS TRYING TO STOP THE KING OF SPAIN FROM PUSHING PROTESTANTS OUT!
ENGLAND AND SPAIN GO HEAD TO HEAD! • SPAIN SENDS THE SPANISH ARMADA TO TAKE DOWN ENGLAND! • The Armada had about 27,000 sailors and soldiers. This mighty fleet was launched to invade England and overthrow Queen Elizabeth and the Anglican Church.
WHO WON? • In July 1588, the much smaller, but faster, English fleet defeated the Armada in a huge battle ENGLAND WON!
THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR SPAIN! • OTHER COUNTRIES LIKE FRANCE, NETHERLANDS, AND ENGLAND STARTED CHALLENGING SPANISH POWER
AT THE SAME TIME MANY EXPLORERS WHERE LOOKING FOR THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE • A water route through North America that would allow sailors to sail from the Atlantic to the Pacific.

WE WOULDN’T FIND THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE UNTIL MUCH..MUCH LATER! • 1850s that Sir Robert McClure • Not until 1903-06 did a single ship make the entire trip through the passage. This was accomplished under the leadership of the Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen
