  1. Math Coffee:A Look at Me, the Common Core Standards and TCPS Math October 4, 2013 Mr. Mark Martin

  2. About Me • Born and raised in San Diego area • College at U.C. San Diego, Revelle College • A wide variety of interests in science, the environment, technology, and psychology • Law School at University of Oregon (J.D.) and University of Utah (LL.M.) • Specialized in environmental law • Legal Career • 15 years in government and private practice • SDSU Teacher Education Program • 15th Year in Teaching • Public, Parochial and Private Schools • 10 years math. Also Science and Computers. • What I like about teaching Math • What I like about TCPS

  3. Common Core Standards: What’s New, What’s Not • Standards Curriculum Materials Methods Assessment • Not an abandonment of the old – rather a shift to promote greater understanding and achievement • Children still learn to add and subtract whole numbers • Then multiply and divide • Then learn fractions • And fraction operations • Then decimals, exponents, positive and negative integers • Algebra • Geometry, etc.

  4. “Toward Greater Focus and Coherence” • [M]athematicscurriculum . . . must become substantially more focused and coherent in order to improve mathematics achievement in this country. To deliver on the promise of common standards, the standards must address the problem of a curriculum that is “a mile wide and an inch deep.” • Mathematical understanding and procedural skill are equally important . . .. • http://www.corestandards.org/Math

  5. Standards For Mathematical Practice • Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. • Reason abstractly and quantitatively. • Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. • Model with mathematics. • Use appropriate tools strategically. • Attend to precision. • Look for and make use of structure. • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

  6. A Roadmap to the Standards • http://www.corestandards.org/Math • http://www.corestandards.org/in-the-states • California - http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/documents/ccssmathstandardaug2013.pdf • Traditional Pathway – 5, 6, Pre-Algebra (7-8), Algebra 1, Geometry • Parent Handbook • Other Resources

  7. Common Core Fits at TCPS • Small Classes • Depth • Understanding • Questioning • Explaining • Defending • Constructing knowledge • Cognitively Guided Instruction

  8. and Play! Common Core at Work . . . Geometry pondering proofs . . . and acting! Pre-Algebra exploring inequalities. Algebra examining the number 4.
