  2. Orientation Before you get started: Common buttons you will use: • This activity concerns the history of 3 aspects of mathematics. Algebra, Geometry, and Calculus. You will be asked to select one, learn the material, and answer a few questions. After completion there will be a printable certificate for you to submit to your instructor. Home Button: returns you to the home menu. Forward Button: Takes you to the next slide. Back Button: Takes you to the previous slide. Quiz Button: Takes you directly to the quiz page. If you are in a lesson it will take you to the corresponding quiz. Continue

  3. WHY MATH?! • Almost everyone at some point in there school career has said to themselves or their teachers, “What’s the point in this! Why do I have to learn it?” • This activity will shed some light onto why these subjects were created. By the end, hopefully, you’ll be able to answer the previous questions on your own.

  4. Orientation The General Outline: • The basics of this will explain: Who created it? Why it was created? How it has effected modern life?

  5. HOME MENU Please Choose a Discipline Algebra Geometry Calculus

  6. QUIZ MENU Which quiz would you like to take? Algebra Geometry Calculus

  7. ALGEBRA Who Invented it?

  8. ALGEBRA • Who? • Algebra was actually developed over 1000’s of years ago from several ancient civilizations from the Babylonian's to the Greek’s. • However, all of there methods were phrased in geometric terms. YAY MATH!

  9. ALGEBRA • Who? • In 820 AD. a Muslim scientist, named Al-Khwarzimi, wrote a book organizing all the ancient algebra into a “deductive science”. • The term algebra (al-jabr) comes from Arabic meaning equation. Our term Algorithm is derived from his name. • He was the first to use zero as a number, and organized most of the basic algebra we use today.

  10. Algebra But why? No algebra was not invented to give you a headache. So what were the problems of the time that required its creation?

  11. ALGEBRA • Why? • Basically simple arithmetic can help solve for one variable. • For example; • this many chickens at this price is how much?

  12. ALGEBRA • Why? • The invention (or completion) of algebra allowed for multivariable problems to be solved, or one variable in complex ways. This made vast advancements in the fields of engineering and astronomy.

  13. Algebra So how has this helped or influenced modern day? Without algebra, many things wouldn’t be around today.

  14. ALGEBRA • How has it helped? • Many things are enhanced, or created even, from the use of algebra. • EconomicsTemperature Chemistry Architecture

  15. ALGEBRA • Now that you have a better understanding of Algebra, Please take the time to write a few sentences describing other uses, (other than the examples you just read) of how this discipline is used in modern day. • When finished click Forward to continue.

  16. ALGEBRA • Now lets review. Here’s a brief video of what you’ve just learned.

  17. ALGEBRAQuiz Time! • 1.) Who is considered the father of algebra? A. Albert Einstein B. Winston Churchill C. Al-Khwarzimi

  18. ALGEBRA • Sorry that’s incorrect… • But don’t give up yet!! Try Again

  19. ALGEBRA • You got it!! • Keep going your doing great. Next

  20. ALGEBRAQuiz Time! • 2.) Which of the following is a modern use of algebra? A. Economics B. Chemistry C. astronomy D. All of the above

  21. ALGEBRA • While that is a benefit, is it the only one? Try Again

  22. ALGEBRA • You got it!! • Keep going your doing great. Next

  23. ALGEBRAQuiz Time! • 3.) Before algebra there was basic arithmetic. What • did algebra enable that arithmetic did not? A. It allowed for the use of irrigation. It allowed for the ability to find sides of a triangle. It allowed for the solving of multivariable equations.

  24. ALGEBRA • Sorry that’s incorrect… • Give it one more try!! Try Again

  25. ALGEBRA • Congratulations! • You’ve successfully completed • “A Brief History of Algebra” • Now try the other disciplines and learn just why you need all this math anyway! Certificate

  26. Geometry Who Invented it?

  27. GEOMETRY • Who? • The basics of geometry have been around for thousands of years, Even before algebra. This is made apparent by many ancient structures such as the pyramids. YES MATH!

  28. GEOMETRY • Who? • It wasn’t until Greek mathematicians starting in the 6th century, did geometry come together. First was Thales. He is the man who decided that reasoning should play the central role over experimentation. He’s the one you can blame for proofs!

  29. GEOMETRY • Who? • Next came Pythagoras. Mainly known for his work with right triangles. But the Pythagoreans added much more than that. Expanding to trigonometry, Pythagoras took geometry further into the higher levels of math. Including a far more accurate approximation for pi.

  30. GEOMETRY • Who? • Along side Pythagoras was a man named Euclid. Known as the father of geometry, he gathered all prior mathematical information, added his own, and wrote a complete book called “The Elements.” He proposed ALL math should be proofed.

  31. GEOMETRY • Who? • Last on our list is Archimedes and Apollonius. Archimedes: devised ways of calculating areas a volumes of shapes. Apollonius: mastered conic sections, where you get your nasty hyperbolas, ellipses, parabolas and circles

  32. GEOMETRY • Knowledge check! • Who is the “father of Geometry”? A. Archimedes B. Euclid C. Plato

  33. GEOMETRY • Sorry that’s not quite it… • But don’t give up yet, you’ll get it this time!! Try Again

  34. GEOMETRY • You got it!! • Let’s keep learning!. Next

  35. GEOMETRY But why? So I know what you’re thinking. If geometry came before algebra, why did they make it? …..That's what you were thinking wasn’t it?!

  36. GEOMETRY • Why? • Well you certainly know the Egyptians built pyramids, and many cultures built houses and buildings. The Greeks however wanted to be able to measure angles, distances and height. This all to better improve their society of flourishing Rome. • Not only did the invention of geometry help with measuring various things from pyramids to planets. It also introduced deductive reasoning as a way of life. You use it everyday in decision making. Making an argument requires Proofs. • Also noteworthy is that after the creation of geometry points and lines had to obey rules and conclusions are easily verified (through proofs).

  37. GEOMETRY So how has this helped or influenced modern day? Yes besides what was just stated in the past few slides!

  38. GEOMETRY • How has it helped? • Miraculous buildings. Flight. Satellites. Moon landing. All of which would not be possible without the creation of geometry • BuildingsFlight Satellites Moon Landing

  39. GEOMETRY • Now that you have a better understanding of Geometry, please take the time to write a few sentences describing other uses, (other than the examples you just read) of how this discipline is used in modern day. • When finished click Forward to continue.

  40. GEOMETRY • Now lets review. Here’s a brief video of what you’ve just learned.

  41. GEOMETRYQuiz Time! • 1.) Who developed conic sections? A. Archimedes B. Apollonius C. Atriumes

  42. GEOMETRY • Sorry that’s incorrect… • But don’t give up yet!! Try Again

  43. GEOMETRY • You got it!! • Keep going your doing great. Next

  44. GEOMETRYQuiz Time! • 2.) Which of the following are two benefits of geometry? • (Select two) A. Satellites B. Video games C. Horticulture D. Flight

  45. GEOMETRY • Sorry that’s incorrect… • But don’t give up yet!! Try Again

  46. GEOMETRY • You got it!! • Keep going your doing great. Next

  47. GEOMETRYQuiz Time! • 3.) Why was Euclid considered the father, and not the other founders? A. He was the best looking one. He was the first person to compile all the math into one book. He was elected father by the other founders

  48. GEOMETRY • Sorry that’s incorrect… • But don’t give up yet!! Try Again
