  5. Heart Attacks • More than 1 million Americans have a heart attack • Occurs when blood clot blocks artery • Can be caused by a spasm of a coronary artery • heart's pumping ability is lessened after a heart attack

Heart Valve Disease • occurs when the heart valves do not work the way they should • 5 million Americans are diagnosed with heart valve disease each year • blood always flows freely in a forward direction and that there is no backward leakage • The two types are:ValvularstenosisValvular insufficiency

  7. Congenital Heart Failure • type of defect or malformation in one or more structures of the heart or blood vessels that occurs before birth. • cause of congenital heart disease is unknown • Some doctor opinions are down syndrome or viral infection during first trimester of pregnancy

  10. Alzheimer’s disease • most common type of dementia • Symptoms of Alzheimer's, including early-onset Alzheimer's, include problems with memory, judgment, and thinking • no cure for this form of dementia.

Parkinson’s disease • Symptoms of Parkinson's disease include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait. • causes are unknown but genetics, aging, and toxins are being researched. • no cure for Parkinson's and herbal remedies are unproven. • prognosis depends on the patient's age and symptoms

  12. Epilepsy • disorders characterized by a tendency for recurrent seizures • drugs are prescribed to control seizures, and rarely surgery is necessary if medications are ineffective

  13. Stroke • Stroke is brain damage caused by a blocked blood vessel or bleeding in the brain • signs of a stroke may include weakness, numbness, blurred vision, confusion, and slurred speech
