Project timeline • Phase I – recommendation to UCIST Feb. 2011 • RFI: April – June 2010 • RFP: July – Nov 2010 (submitted Aug, review by Nov) • Further info, including open source: Jun – Nov 2010 • Test and assess short list: Nov – Dec 2010 • Phase II – implement, pilot, migration, to May 2012 • Pre-pilot? (very small group): Winter 2011 • Pilot (real use): May 2011 – July 2011 • First migration: July – Aug 2011 (for Sept 2011) • Final migrations: Sept 2011 – March 2012
Faculty and student say … • Be mobile ready • More “live” interaction (presence mgnt, audio and video) • Math tools • Be integration ready/Web 2.0 ready (drag in components and tools) • Intuitive interface, user customization
Campus and tool integrations • Campus infrastructure: rosters (class list add/drop), authN(ADS/LDAP), grades • Tool integrations, including: • Turnitin(plagiarism) • iClicker • eReserves/Ares • WimbaVoice
Other linkages • Student Success (identifying academically “at risk”, tracking usage) • Outcomes-based Assessments (Eng looking for solutions) • Accessibility, also ON legislation (OPD) • ePortfolios (WatPD, programs) • Course evaluations online (considered)
Where is the project now? • Request for Information (RFI) in May. • Request for Proposals (RFP) early August. • Analysis of proposals almost complete. • Started investigation of open source. • Calls to other schools running o/s. • Local installations to do basic needs testing. • “Live in” day at other schools?
Next steps • Proceed to a short list. • Recommendation to UCIST (sponsor) in February 2011. • Pilot in Spring 2011. • Migration, migration, migration. • Also, next week, launch communications web site.
Big picture • LMSs tend toward boring but can be augmented with better things (integrations). • Sharing info between systems is important to integrations (standard APIs). • Mobile is important to students even if not well understood as learning tool. • Also, question of external hosting.
Some adoptions and RFPs • McMaster had decided on Blackboard last year, but in Feb. changed to Desire2Learn • Laurier went to D2L (Guelph with D2L too) • Queen’s going Moodle • UVic going Moodle • McGill going to RFP • Alberta planning change
Other changes in LMS market • Blackboard bought Elluminate and Wimba, big communications tools in univ space • New LMSs (arriving daily) • Instructure Canvas • Brain Honey • Nixty • Interactyx
