How to calm the restless mind? At one point or another, we have all had to calm a restless mind; be it our own or someone else’s. Sometimes the mind just goes haywire over anything be it something related to family, health, relationships, jobs etc. and we must know how to calm it down to think and act properly. There are quite a few ways to bring equilibrium to the state of chaos. Start with simple breathing techniques. Deep breaths and rhythmic breathing helps create sync between the mind and the body. Listening to calming music helps further. Write. Some people feel at ease after writing out there feelings. If you entrust a friend, talk it out. It feels lighter to share the weight off your chest. If you are feeling too anxious, the 5-4-3-2-1 coping mechanism can really help. Spot five things you can see, four things you can touch, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. This will make you feel grounded and in place and it will distract your mind from your panic. Mindful meditation is also a good tool for this. Telling the mind to focus on the now, being where you are at that moment-being present. Take a moment, and focus on your breaths. Listen to yourself breathing in and out. Listen to the otherwise ignored ambient noises like the sound of the fan, sound of the traffic. Try to place yourself in your surroundings. The body is connected to the mind, and hence relaxing the body can also help relax the mind. Progressive muscle relaxation can help relax the body and free up mind space. This process involves tensing and relaxing each muscle group. Progressive muscle relaxation can reduce anxiety and muscle tension. If we keep in mind these small things, we can help our mind be a little more calm and deal with ease any situation at hand.
