  1. Lecture 8.1: Solid Waste and the 3R’s Chapter 16

  2. Purchase products with less packaging

  3. The Solid Waste Stream

  4. E-Waste & Planned Obsolescence

  5. What About e-Waste? • China • India • Ghana

  6. Three Goals (THREE R’s) • (1) Reduce the amount of waste • (2) Reuse products • (3) Recycle materials • Charles Moore: PLASTICS in the World's Oceans

  7. (1) Reduce • Source reduction • Products are designed and manufactured in ways that decrease the volume of solid waste in the waste stream • Pollution Prevention Act (1990) • Dematerialization • Progressive decrease in the size and weight of a product as a result of technological improvements

  8. (2) Reuse • Extends resource supplies • Maintains high-quality matter • Reduces energy use • Refillable beverage containers • Reusable shipping containers and grocery bags

  9. (2) Reuse • Refilling glass beverage bottles • Heavier glass that costs more • Japan recycles almost all bottles • Reused 20 times

  10. (3) Recycle • Every ton of recycled paper saves: • 17 trees • 7000 gallons of water • 4100 kwatt-hrs of energy • 3 cubic yards of landfill space • Recycle • Glass bottles, newspapers, steel cans, plastic bottles, cardboard, office paper

  11. Characteristics of Recyclable Materials • Easily isolated from other waste • Available in large quantities • Valuable • Pay-as-you-throw garbage collection

  12. Aluminum can, used once Steel can used once Recycled steel can Glass drink bottle used once Recycled aluminum can Recycled glass drink bottle Refillable drink bottle, used 10 times 0 8 16 24 32 Energy (thousands of kilocalories) Recycling

  13. Reduces global warming Reduces acid deposition Reduces urban air pollution Make fuel supplies last longer Reduces air pollution Saves energy Reduces energy demand Reduces solid waste disposal Recycling Reduces mineral demand Reduces water pollution Reduces habitat destruction Protects species Benefits of Recycling

  14. (3) Recycle • Recycling Paper • US recycles 50% • Many developed countries are higher • Recycling Glass • US recycles 25% • Costs less than new glass • Can be used to make glassphalt

  15. (3) Recycle -Closed Loop System • 40% of aluminum recycled in US • Recycled aluminum uses over 90% fewer resources

  16. Recycling in the US • Centralized recycling of mixed wastes • Economic benefits • Increasing recycling in the US- • LAWS: ex 10% from recycled products

  17. Recycling Metals other than Aluminum • Lead, gold, iron, steel, silver and zinc • Recycling Plastic • Less than 20% is recycled • Less expensive to make from raw materials

  18. Recycling Tires • Few products are made from old tires • Playground equipment • Trashcans • Garden hose • Carpet • Roofing materials • 36% of tires are currently recycled to make other products

  19. Composting • Includes: • Food scraps • Sewage sludge • Agricultural manure • Yard waste • Reduces yard waste in landfills • Can be sold or distributed to community

  20. Videos • VIDEO: Plastic Bottle Recycling • VIDEO: Automobile Recycling
