  1. The Fifth National Public Speaking Competition in English15th April, 2009 The Fifth Public Speaking Competition took place at the Universidad de Los Andes, which kindly offered ESU Chile its excellent facilities for this prestigious event. Thanks to the sponsorship of Books & Bits, Librería Inglesa, and HSBC Bank, the winner, Pablo Jullián, and runner-up, Roshni Dadlani, had the opportunity or participating in the International Finals at the English-Speaking Union’s Headquarters in London in May. They competed with over 70 students from all over the world, who were hosted by local members of ESU in England. Books & Bits and Librería Inglesa also contributed book prizes for the eight finalists and their schools.

  2. The general theme for 2009 was “Regeneration and Renewal”. Participants were expected to develop a personal and original speech with their own title within the general theme. They were expected to do considerable research and present arguments, supporting evidence and statistics. The speech had to be suitable for an international audience. 1st.   4. ESU Chile is most grateful to our Guest Speaker, Dr Sergio Godoy, of the Universidad Católica de Chile. While awaiting the results of the finals, Dr. Godoy entertained the audience with a speech on the character of the British people. He made specific reference to how Sir Winston Churchill had reinvented himself to succeed in several different fields.
