  2. INTENTION • Better understanding of the Roma • Observe socio-economic issues • Consider how best to address criminality and maximise child protection • Identify good policing practices • Develop network of contacts for information sharing • Environmentally scan for future issues here

Roma in Govanhill • Estimated between 2000 – Eastern European Roma in Govanhill. • Reason for Migration – to escape poverty, unemployment, racism, ethnic stereotyping. • Estimated stay in UK – Between 1 – 5 years. • Why UK? – Access to benefits, Work Recruitment Agencies, Low cost rental Accommodation. • Why Govanhill – Traditional area of settlement for new migrant populations – Irish, Italian, Jewish, Pakistani.

Roma in Govanhill • Prevent Social exclusion Roma segregated in settlements with high degree of social exclusion • A minority gain employment • Successful integration by assimilated Roma • Discrimination/Instutionalised Racism/Organised Criminality • Intelligence gaps and unclear picture of Roma in Govanhill- Suspicion of authority • Issue with children not attending school-improving

RECOMMENDATIONS • Develop intelligence and greater links with the Roma community • Improve social inclusion-tackle discrimination • ACT Now • Drug Workshops • Knife Crime • What’s right and what’s wrong • Hate Crime Awareness • Improve representation-communitycouncils/LCPP/Political • Deliver appropriate awareness training for police officers, and relevant staff from partner agencies

RECOMMENDATIONS • Explore opportunities to obtain EU funding • Continue and further develop multi-agency approach through neighbourhood management and community planning in connection with housing, health, education and the law-Roma Hub • Evaluate structures and groups that support Roma and ensure they are effective and feed into neighbourhood management structures.
