The area of Karelia – 180,5 thousand sq km (1.06% of the total territory of Russia) Population of the Republic of Karelia makes 687.5 thousand people The republic consists of 16 municipal districts and two urban districts (Petrozavodsk and Kostomuksha), where 109 settlements (22 urban, 87 rural), 808 inhabited localities, including 13 towns, are located.   15. The Republic of KareliaNature More than 49% of the area of the republic is covered with forest; fauna comprises brown bears, reindeers, elks, mountain hares, European beavers, Greenland seals (in the White sea); fish species include salmons, trouts, navagas, herrings, cods, flounders.

  16. Quarter of the republic territory is watery surface. There are more than 61 thousand lakes and 27 thousand rivers in Karelia. The largest are the Ladoga lake (its area is 17,7 thousand square km) and the Onega lake (its area is 9,9 thousand square km). The largest rivers are Vodla (400 km), Vyg, Kovda, Kem, Suna, Shuya.   17. 50 types of minerals located in more than 400 deposits and ore occurrences were discovered in Karelia. The main minerals are iron ore, titan, vanadium, molybdenum, precious metals, diamonds, mica, construction materials (granites, diabases, marbles), ceramic raw material (pegmatites, spars), appatit-carbonate ores, alkaline amphibole asbestos. Students At present: 19 500 graduate and postgraduate students; 63 majors of higher professional education and 57 majors of postgraduate studies. 33 bachelor’s and 17 master’s degree programs are licensed. Annually more than 4100 people take training, re-training and advanced training courses.

  41. By 31.12.07 there are 147 licentiate students and 2 doctoral students. At the university 9 thesis councils function (3 doctoral councilsand 6 licentiate councils). In 2007 41 licentiate dissertations and5 doctoral theses were defended. Staff Training for Higher Education System

Annually more than 4500specialists of the RK and other Russian regions take advanced training courses in PetrSU structural departments that are engaged in the lifelong learning system: PetrSU Karelian regional institute of management, economy and law to the Government of the Republic of Karelia; Faculty of advanced training courses PetrSU education and innovation centre; Regional centre of new information technologies; Faculty of post-diploma medical education; Sectoral base centre of the Russian education on labour security.   43. In 2009in PetrSU: 278 research works were completed (22of them – on foreign grants and contracts). The total amount of financing made up more than 130 million rubles (about28millions – from foreign sources); 87 scientific meetings were organized (international, all-Russian and regional conferences and seminars); 112 applications for calls for topics, projects and grants were presented in terms of the Russian scientific programmes and funds, 40 of them are approved. In the educational process : 56computer rooms with 600 work places, multimedia-laboratory, videohall to conduct video-lectures more than 300 distance courses developed by lecturers on the basis of modern technologies of network e-learning are used PetrSU web site was the winner of the all-Russian contest of the educational Internet resources. On the all-Russian exhibition-fair “Modern educational environment” PetrSU Regional centres of new information technologies were highly awarded: For the development works in the sphere of information provision of the university activity; For the creation of the multi-level system of open distance learning; For the provision of GIS-resources for the education system.
