  2. hatchet • A small ax with a short handle, for use with one hand • The man used his hatchet to chop down the branches.

  3. ignite • To set on fire • I used a match to ignite the fire.

  4. painstaking • Very careful; particular; diligent • It is painstaking work to put thread through a needle.

  5. quill • A stiff, sharp hair or spine like pointed end of a feather • The porcupine’s back was covered in quills.

  6. registered • To have had some effect; to have made an impression • The message from the inspirational speaker registered in the minds of the students.

  7. smoldered • Burned and smoked without flame • The fire pit smoldered long after the campfire went out.
