Osteoarthritis Facts • Osteoarthritis affects an estimated 20.7 million Americans, mostly after age 45. • Women are more commonly affected than men. • OA is responsible for more than 7 million physician visits per year. • As many as half the people who have OA do not know what type of arthritis they have and cannot make informed decisions about their care because treatment options vary among the 100 different types of arthritis.   4. Rheumatoid Arthritis Facts • Rheumatoid arthritis affects 2.1 million Americans. • 1.5 million women have rheumatoid arthritis compared to 600,000 men. • On-set is usually middle-aged, appears more frequently in older people, but affects children and young adults. V105

  9. Prevalence of Arthritis or Chronic Joint Symptoms (CJS) Among U.S. Adults by Physical Activity Level, 2001. • People with arthritis are less active and heavier than the population in general. Recommended activity is moderate physical activity at least 5 days per week for 30 minutes or more per day, vigorous physical activity on at least 3 days per week for at least 20 minutes per day, or both. Physical activity includes leisure-time, household, and transportation.Insufficient activity is some activity but not enough to meet recommendations.Inactive is no reported moderate or vigorous physical activity in leisure-time, or for household or transport purposes. The Future of Arthritis • By the year 2030, the number persons aged >65 years who have arthritis or a chronic joint disease will nearly double. • During 2005 through 2030, the percentage of the U.S. population is expected to increase from 12.9% to 20.0% • The number could jump from 21.4 million in 2005 to 41.1 million in 2030.
