  2. What is it? Archetype- universalpatternsof characters, symbols, & situationsthat reappear throughout periods of time and different culturestypically found in stories.

Three Basic Archetype Patterns: 1) Character Archetypes- ex. hero, villain, sidekick companion 2) Symbolic Archetypes- ex. magic weapon, black & white colors 3) Situational Archetypes ex. young man sets out on a journey, meets a girl & falls in love, & then must battle to save the woman he loves

  4. Background Information on Archetypes: • Carl Jung (1875-1961)– Swiss psychiatrist known for creating theidea of archetypes • *protégé of Sigmund Freud (a famous Austrian psychoanalyst) • * Jung noticed that people around the world and from different time periods told the same kind of patterns of stories • * Jung wondered: How could people from all across the world and time who have had no contact with each other do this?

  5. Soooo………. As a result, Jung created a theory called the “Collective Unconscious Theory”

The “Collective Unconscious” Theory • The Collective Unconscious Theory- idea that humans despite the time period or cultural are born with the concept of archetypes already formed in our brain • these story patternslink usnot onlyto other humans in the past and present • all humans are unique and different, yet we share the same idea of these universal patterns
