Sobeys Inc. is a local, well known supermarket. • Vast amounts of information, tools and resources to help us better understand how the organization operates and sustains. • Company website has a lot of useful information. • Purpose of this project is to take different approaches to the organization and to look at it through different lenses.

  3. Originally founded in 1907 in Stellarton, Nova Scotia by John W. Sobey as a meat delivery business • Expanded into a full grocery store serving mainly Pictou County in 1924 by Frank H. Sobey(son of John) • First self serve supermarket opened in 1949. • Is now Atlantic Canada’s most dominant grocer. • Went head to head with large supermarket rival Loblaws after expanding into southern Ontario. • After years of expanding, new work methods and organizational structures have been implemented into this corporation.

  4. Feminist Perspective • Developed over a period of time but came to prominence in the 1970’s when feminist studies of OB began to challenge the neglect of gender. • Focus is on women • Concerned with identifying and addressing processes of sexual discrimination.

  5. Sobeys • Empire Company Limited is the parent company of Sobey’s • 16 out of 17 members of the board of directors of Empire are male.

  6. Managerialist Perspective • Developed with the work of Frederick Taylor with the Midvale Steel Company. • Focus is on the manager • Concerned with how behavior contributes to organizational improvement.

  7. Sobeys • Standardization of routine tasks (checklist) • Employees are selected for a job based on their ability to do that particular job and then trained in the best ways of completing those particular tasks

  11. OrganizationalStructure • Sobeys Inc can be related to Mintzbergs five basic elements of an organizational structure. • Top Management • Middle Management • On the Floor Production • Technical Support Staff • Administrative Staff

Complexity • Complexity in Sobeys Inc refers to the level of authority between the top management and front line production workers. • Tall hierarchy. • Sobeys Inc is vertically complex across the nation. • This allows the span of control for the managers to be easily designated to their employees.

  13. Formalization • Rules and regulations that Sobeys Inc are guided by. • In Sobeys Inc, the rules and regulations differ from higher management to on floor workers. • An example would be the formalization that occurs for the Chief Executive Officer and the regulations prepared for cashiers at supermarkets.

Centralization - Centralization within Sobeys Inc. refers to the concentration of decision making for the company. - The Board of Directors is responsible for many of the major decisions made for Sobeys Inc. - The centralization mainly occurs at the highest hierarchy levels and flows downward to the managerial and on floor production levels.

  16. conclusion • Uses same type of structure as majority of grocers. • Communities all over Atlantic Canada have made Sobeys their regular grocer. • Very family oriented Board of Directors. This is important to customers. • Sobeys has made efforts toward sustaining the environment and reducing waste. • -Has a number of different work methods implemented in the organization to try to maximize efficiency.
