  1. Creating value at nanoscale The International Iberian Nanotechnology Laboratory Avenida Mestre José Veiga 4715-330 BRAGA, PORTUGAL José Rivas (Director General INL) E-MAIL ADDRESS: jose.rivas@inl.int TELEPHONE: +351 253 140 112 1 Jose Rivas, Director General INL

  2. Nanotechnology is the engineering of functional systems at the molecular scale and it has the potential to impact every sector of our economy. It includes next generation materials, biotechnology, electronics, energy, homeland security, medical devices, among others. • Figures from 2010: • Thee global market value for nanotechnology was estimated in $15.7 billion, but is expected to increase to nearly $27 billion in 2015, representing a 5-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.1% (BCC Research) • Around 5 billion Euros were invested in Nanotechnology R&D. Europe accounts for 33% of Global R&D Nanotechnology funding (Mihail Rocco) • American nanotech companies captured nearly $575 million in venture capital. (Lux Research). We estimate slightly lower figures in Europe Impact of nanotechnology on core industrial branches. According to the NNI, the worldwide need for nanotechnology workers is expected to reach 2 million by 2015. Europe will house around 25% percent of them. (National Science Foundation) 2 Jose Rivas, Director General INL

  4. State-of-the-art equipment for Nanofabrication and Nanocharacterization 4 Jose Rivas, Director General INL

  5. The idea of the INL 1) Location: Braga- Portugal 2) Status: Intergovernmental Organization 3) Researchers:~200 scientists 4) Total Staff: ~ 400 people 5) Research Space: 40 Labs • General presentation of the Institute Braga Singular legal and Organizational environment exclusively designed for an International Research Community 1) Flexible immigration and family reagrupation conditions. 2) Attractive remuneration and fiscal conditions for international scientists 3) Work schedules and policies adapted to the particularities of a research Organization 4) A legal framework designed to facilitate the adhesion of new countries 5) Legal facilities to attract investors interested in high-risk fast-growing ventures 5 Jose Rivas, Director General INL

  6. Cross-boarder character and expected impact • INL was created to empower the economy, to enhance the competiveness and to promote employment. The project has an international scope with special focus on its members states (Spain & Portugal) and the region where INL is located (the Eurorregion Galicia-Norte de Portugal). • Promoting outstanding nanoscienceand nanotechnology research. • Creating solid scientific communities between member and non-member states in the field of nanotechnology. • Developing collaborations between universities and industries, as well as between public and private sectors, training researchers, and contributing to the development of a skilled work force for the nanotechnology industry. • Organizing and sponsoring European and international co-operation in nanoscience and nanotechnology research. • Fostering entrepreneurship and new business around Nanotechnology. 6 Jose Rivas, Director General INL Jose Rivas, Director General INL

  7. Creating a highly talented research community • 11 Group Leaders / 31 Research Fellows/ 18 engineer and highly qualified professionals in support activities • 19 nationalities (Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, China, Colombia, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States, Venezuela) • Average age of 37 years • Male/Female ratio: 68/32 7 Jose Rivas, Director General INL Jose Rivas, Director General INL

  8. INL project goals • The INL wanted to act as a cohesive factor in both the Portuguese and Spanish nanoscience and nanotechnology communities. The laboratory participated in more than 40 FP7 proposals. Many of them in collaboration with neighbour institutions and companies from Spain and Portugal • A goal of the INL was to establish close relationship and collaborative projects with national and international scientific institutions of research, companies and centres of academic excellence. • INL made a big effort on Dissemination activities and promotion of Nanotechnology through events, internal meetings and workshops with companies • Currently offers Research Services (mostly in nanofabrication and nanocharacterization) 8 Jose Rivas, Director General INL Jose Rivas, Director General INL
