  2. WMO Data Representation Forms • The global exchange of meteorological (or associated to meteorology) data has to be done in an unambiguous and most efficient way for use by many different applications in all countries. • A WMO “code” is a way of representing data which are exchanged internationally between countries = a data representation form.

  3. Traditional Alphanumeric Codes • Traditional Alphanumeric Codes (TAC) were developed for certain data types. • TAC have fixed format. • New requirements (increasing volume, complexity of observations, new data types) cannot be met.

  4. Table-Driven Code Forms Table-Driven Code Forms (TDCF) are able to meet the new requirements: • EXPANDABILITY (ability to add easily new parameters, to change accuracy), • SELF DESCRIPTION (description of content), • FLEXIBILITY (ability to vary the content), • SUSTAINABILITY (old archives readable), • COMPRESSION(binary TDCF).

  5. Other Data Representation Systems Expert Team on Assessment of Data Representation Systems (ET-ADRS) reviewed TDCF (GRIB/BUFR/CREX), XML, NetCDF, HDF and ASN 1 (Washington, April 2008). In particular their strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and treats were examined: • GRIB and BUFR are the most suitable formats for the real time operational exchange between NMHSs. • The other formats offer some advantages for distribution of data to the end users, included aviation.

  6. Migration of aviation OPMET data • The ICAO Council adopted the first stage of WMO Migration Plan (start of the experimental exchange). • BUFR templates for representation of OPMET data were developed in 2007, all ICAO requirements being met. • Expert Team on OPMET Data Representation (ET-ODR) was established to discuss concerns raised by RA VI aviation experts regarding migration to TDCF. • ICAO activities related to migration of OPMET data to BUFR were suspendedin 2008. • ET-ODR recommend XML for the exchange of OPMET information in October 2009.

  7. Recent WMO meetings with Migration to TDCF on their agenda • The second meeting of the Expert Team on OPMET Data Representation (ET-ODR), Paris, France, 26 October 2009. • The second meeting of the Inter-Programme Expert Team on Data Representation and Codes (IPET-DRC), Brasilia, 31 August – 3 September 2010. • Meeting of the Expert Team on WIS-GTS Operations and Implementation (ET-OI),Geneva, 22 - 24 September 2010.
