Biography • He was born on November 30, 1835 in Florida, Missouri. • His real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, (Mark Twain was just a pen name.) • He was raised in Hannibal, Missouri. • He had up to five jobs before he was married, and had two more afterwards. • He married Olivia Langdon in the year of 1870 in Elmira, New York.

  3. Continued Biography • Together, they had a few children, though Clemens had outlived all of them. • Often, people gave him wild topics to write sections on in the newspaper, and that’s how he became a writer. • He died on April 12, 1910 after 75 years of age.

Interesting Facts • Halley’s Comet arrived in the year of both Clemens’ birth and death. • He would often wear a white linen suit with red socks just to see how people would react. • None of his stories had a setting in a city. • He was the first “true” American author since he had no European influence. • There is cartoon character who is supposedly based on Mark Twain.

  5. Famous Works • Tom Sawyer. - came out in 1876 - arguably his best written novel ever - based on many children and adults in his childhood neighborhood in Hannibal. - 35 chapters • The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn - came out in 1885 - related to Tom Sawyer because Huck Finn is Tom’s friend
