  2. Why did a Cold War emerge between the superpowers after 1945?  LOs To be able to differentiate between different schools of historiographical debate To develop skills in testing the interpretations of historians by comparing sources & using own knowledge

  3.  Your task • Read Sources K, L, M & N on p.61-2 and complete the source buster table. • Highlight similarities between the sources. •  Extension. Which view is the most accurate in your opinion? What evidence will you use to support your judgement?

  4.  Your task • “How far do you accept the view of Source K that it was American policy that crystallized the Cold War?” • Make a list of points that would suggest it was: • the fault of the US • the fault of the USSR • other factors.

  5. US fault • Development of nuclear weapons and arms race • Foreign policy of US, e.g. containment & roll back, abandonment of isolationism • Attitudes of leaders, esp. Truman • Anti-communism in US, e.g. Long Telegram, NSC-68

  6. USSR Fault • Communist expansionism, e.g. Red Army, Communist takeovers in Eastern Europe, Communist institutions e.g. Cominform, Warsaw Pact • Attitudes of Stalin: suspicion of West, failure to implement Yalta & Potsdam, Berlin Blockade, ‘psychotic’ personality

  7. Other factors • Role of Western governments, e.g. Churchill & Iron Curtain speech, need for financial aid after WWII, Greece (1947) • Domestic pressures, e.g. pressure on Truman to adopt hard-line approach, Stalin’s fear of internal takeover • Breakdown of machinery of diplomacy, e.g. end of WWII, Council of Foreign Ministers

  8.  Your task • Work in pairs. Use the success criteria on the next slide to produce a Level 4 / 5 answer. • Print off your work and peer assess those of you around the class. • Extension. Have a go at writing an introduction and conclusion to the question, too.

  9.  Extension • Read the Gaddis, ‘Cold War’ p.40-43 and Isaacs, ‘Cold War’ p.93-100 and note down the reasons they give for the start of Cold War. Which historiographical stance did they take?

  10. Plenary • List the different historiographical schools you have studied • What tips would you give an A level student tackling source-based questions for this paper for the first time
