  2. August 26, 2008 I believe we are all responsible for our own learning. You get out of school what you want from it. What are your expectations for this school year? How will you go about achieving your goals?

  3. August 27, 2008 So, you made it through the first day of 8th grade! How did it go? Did you meet anyone new? Did you get lost? What went well? Tell your journal all about your first day.

  4. August 28, 2008 Rules! Rules! And more rules! Take out your agenda. Choose one rule you think is a good rule and explain why it is a good rule. Choose another rule you think is a bad rule and explain what is wrong with it.

  5. Today we will: • Share our group information with our classmates. • Highlight necessary information in the agenda. • Identify the stages of the writing process.

  7. August 29, 2008 • Author Joan Aiken explains that since she was a girl, she has carried a small notebook with her everywhere she goes. She says: “Try to write a few pages every day. Never write anything that bores you. Collect interesting stories from the newspapers. Think of the end of a story before you start it. Read as much as you possibly can.” • Which piece of Joan Aiken’s advice do you find most helpful? Why do you think she says, “Never write anything that bores you”?

  13. September 3, 2008 Author and illustrator Aliki Brandenburg was encouraged by her kindergarten teacher to pursue her interests in art and writing. Is there anyone in your life who has encouraged you to pursue one of your talents? Explain how this encouragement makes you feel. Is there anyone in your life whose talent you might encourage?

  19. September 5, 2008 I’m Bold, I’m Brave by Jack Prelutsky I’m bold, I’m brave, I know no fear. I’m gallant as a buccaneer. Is that a hornet by my ear? Gangway! I’m getting out of here! • What qualities does the speaker of the poem give to himself? Do you think these are accurate descriptive words for the speaker? Explain. Would you want to be friends with this person based on his description of himself? Now write your own funny poem about someone you know very well—yourself! Use at least three words that describe your personality.
